Thanks for the replies. I was talking to a friend tonight about this very subject. Since he's a pilot, he may not be the best resource
. He decided to become his own boss in investing money after his UAL stock went in the crapper. He went a step further and said a company may not be doing that well (e.g., dotcom businesses) but people still were willing to pay a big price. While an established company may be doing well and the stock stays flat. He pretty much thought stocks are a socially accepted method of gambling. Bottom line it is a way of life and that's the way the game is played.
Guess I look as investments as something that should be more tangible like property or investing in a company in hopes of getting some type of return such as profit sharing.
Will look into some of the books that some of the previous posters have recommended. Happy hunting.
