I can't find the official press release, but it is on Delta.com.....Freedom Airlines operating ERJ's from JFK-ACK this summer. I guess trying to compete with B6. :smash:

As a former 9K employee in Ops/Gate/Ramp at PVD/ACK, all I can say is ACK is going to be nothing short of a DISASTER this summer in that terminal.........:bomb:

Definitely....9K is doing the ground handling for CO and DL, as well as the ticket/ramp for B6. CO is gonna handle the ticketing for DL. That whole airport is gonna be quite messy. The annex is being torn down, so CO and US have to operate in a trailer!!

Potential reality show....

But seriously I don't see how anything will ever go smoothly on any given day of the week at that place. ACK is going to implode this summer...

Mr. I,

Yeah, there is a little bit of a deck angle difference between a 402 and a jet. Not to mention the difference if category. Everyone knows that the 402 operators do not really have mins, and some pilots even have created their very own approaches up there. UNDER VFR in IMC.....Fly to this AM radio station, turn to this heading for 20 seconds, descend 400 feet..... and whamo hit another 402. Its going to happen at some point, they have been using the small airplane big sky theory up there for too long. If they keep increasing the mix of traffic into ACK I predict something very very bad will happen. The jet operators will never get in this summer even when it is VFR because a certain idiot (or two or three) will set off a TA. It was a good ride but I am glad to be done with that madness. Be safe up there bro.

I think ACK should be a special use airport. Some of these pilot have no idea what kind of swarm of 402s they are getting ready to descend into.

Yawn all you want, but you can not dispute that there are at least four reasons that 402s get in go while larger, faster airplanes are going missed. Most of these reasons are not restricted just to ACK, but are the reasons that larger aircraft go around while smaller aircraft get in.

Anyone that has flown for Cape Air, Nantucket Airlines, Island Air, or Nantucket Shuttle knows......

1. The 402 is slower than most of the other planes attempting the approach into ACK when it is 1800 RVR.

2. The view of the pilots in a larger aircraft than a 402 is more skyward at approach speed than that of a larger aircraft. (Aka: deck angle)

3. 402s make slower approaches than larger aircraft, thus giving them more time to make a decision to continue to 100 ft above TDZE than larger aircraft when it it "down to the lights."

4. Complacency of some (but not the majority) of the pilots that rarely fly between airports other than ACK and HYA cause them to have a case of "get there itis and peak below syndrome"

Not all of the items above are negative items, in fact some of them illustrate why the 402 is the perfect plane for the HYA to ACK job.

How about no radar altimeter screaming at you "minimums, minimums?" and actually jipping you out of 20 or 40 feet.... That makes all the difference right there.

The 402s get into ACK, MVY, and HYA when others go missed is because they fly below minimums... plain and simple. Has nothing to do with "deck angle" or a slower approach.

I spent nearly 4 years flying Beech 1900s around the cape. I've gone missed out of all those airports multiple times while the 402s kept on landing. I had no problems taking a real good look ;) for the lights at minimums and still went missed (did I say multiple times?).

No disrespect meant to the pilots...

Hello,
Under the best of conditions ACK is a "Cluster-Foxtrot", and adding more traffic to the mix i.e.; DL and JBA is going to make things even more interesting on the ramp and terminal than flying. Throw in some late afternoon/evening fog, an assorted mechanical and you have all the makings of the annual "Angry New Yorker Association" meeting.
ACK is unique in it's often harsh weather, high-density seasonal traffic and outstanding ATC/airfield facilities. If one were to look at a "pork barrel" then ACK is your airport of choice. Given the fact that it has a high percentage of millionaires albeit billionaires that call it home either permanently or during the summer. Nantucket boasts better equipment then many much larger communities.
Recently, a major funding allocation from the Comm. of Mass was authorized to the tune of $12M for renovation/addition to the terminal. However, this summer as an earlier post pointed out is going to be somewhat rustic. Trailers, tents and holding pens are going to be the norm for the pax flying on the larger equipment. All this and ground stops into LGA EVERY AFTERNOON is going to make for an interesting summer. I recommend NOT bidding the afternoon runs out to the "rock". Fortunately, us Beech drivers will be doing something this summer. Although, it's clear as mud exactly where and at what time we will be doing it. Apparently, HYA is not going to host the SAAB this summer and ALB crews will be doing RONs in HYA to cover the ACK stuff. Schedule is showing NO 1900 flying out of either AVK or MVY this year. So, it's a summer of reserve doing BOS-ISP-BOS or some other less popular route in the summer. Hey, at least we have the new runway in BOS thats pointed at a hotel to make life more interesting!
