I'm in a difficult position in that I know of a commercial pilot that has not declared an existing medical condition in order to get a class 1 medical. This is first hand information and was apparently done with the knowledge of the Medical Examiner, who agreed to declare a lesser condition.

I realise that this is extremely damaging information to the person concerned but I believe that safety should always come first. What should I do?

If the AME agreed to issue a First Class Medical even though there is a pre-existing medical condition that is not any of your buisness. Many people that have pre-existing diseases can be issued a First Class Medical, but usually there is a 6-8 month waiting peroid for the person's health records to be examined at OK City. Yes, your concerns may be in the intrest of safety, but I wouldn't wish the horror of loosing a medical on my worst enemy.

I highly doubt that a herpes outbreak is going to affect safety of flight. I would do nothing.

A preexisting condition means nothing. I have two preexisting conditions which amount to nothing, but for which I have signed "previously reported, no change" for years. I don't remember when they were ever reported, but since I've been reporting them for so long, I really don't care (and neither does the FAA).

You didn't specify the condition, but if the AME had full knowledge of the situation and attached his signature to the medical certificate, then the AME has already taken responsibility for this. I realize that your question was asked on moral grounds: you feel that a condition exists about which you are responsible as one who holds some knowledge or information...and who has a moral obligation to do the right thing.

I won't question your sense of honor, as one always has a duty to report or address an unsafe condition. However, the person to whom you should report it, if anyone, is the aviation medical examiner...who has apparently already reviewed the facts and made a decision presumably based on professional judgement.

If, however, you still feel that an unsafe condition exists, you should get more information before proceeding, and then address the issue according to what your conscience requires of you.

As asked previously, what is the nature of the condition, and what do you perceive as the danger?

If I were you I would stay out of other peoples business. It is probably not a big deal anyway. I know I have one of those situations myself. I have been a kidney stone sufferer for years. My Urologists treats me each time and never reports it to my FAA Dr or to my airline. He also tells me that he has many other pilot patients that he treats for the same condition that ask him not to report do to the fact that the condition could ground the pilot. No big deal. Also, my FAA DR is aware of my Stone condition and is working with me to make sure that I do not lose my medical. So you see pre existing medicals, while none of your business, are not all that big of a deal some times.

I am just curious how this guys herpes is a major safety concern? I mean if you arn't sleeping with him, why would you be in fear? How would herpes affect his flying abilities? Just curious, I am seriously asking, not trying to be a smart ass.

They're no joke. My herpes tick me off every day, and they seam to itch more at altitude.

Pre-existing condition

Worry about yourself and not this other guy. Let him deal with it. Don't be a rat.

ROFL Generaltso

why don't you mind your own fing buisness. This guy obviously thought of you as a friend and a confident to tell you this. He was obviously wrong because you are proving to be a rat.

MIND YOUR OWN BUISNESS get some cream for the herpes and put a rainbow sticker on your car.

what kind of herpes?

If your friend has herpes, no big deal. If, however, your friend's aircraft has space-herpes...much bigger problem.:D

Space Herpes

Since this condition only manifests itself occaisionally on the skin of the aircraft, it shouldn't be problem.

While most of you are thinking herpes shouldn't be a problem...remember there were a few pilots fired for flying without the uniform-if they had herpes it could be a risk to the other pilots still flying without the uniform...

Some disease can be transmitted through shared headsets, microphones and O2 masks.
Many pilots use personal headsets but still share hand mikes for passenger PA announcements. Some of the new generation cockpits have turned out to be so noisy that airlines are starting to install fixed noise canceling headsets (which have to be shared). Don't know if herpes can transmit like this but anyone with serious germs or viruses should be extra careful and protect others.

In general I would recommend all of you to sterilize any microphones that are not exclusively used by yourself.

Who died and left you in charge?????

You have got to be kidding me! I would like to ask you what medical school you attended and do you hold an A.M.E. authorization? If your answer to these two questions is no,I would suggest you mind your own business. With your total time I would also suggest that you worry about your own needs instead of nosing in others. If you make these comments on forums like this and they turn out to be untrue you have damaged these two people in their respective professional and private lives for which I hope they sue and take you for all you have and hope to have.
At the very least you should have gone to the A.M.E. and the pilot not to this board!
May all of your selfrighteous acts come back and bite you one day

P.M. ME IF YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW I REALLY FEEL

I agree.....what an a$$. Mind your own fing business. May the God of Revenge pounce on your a$$ some day and cost you your job........what a friend you are.
