Mini

Freq, Course, lowest alt, missed point, missed alt, hold entry.

If you are using 2 sets of plates IDing the chart number isnt a bad idea either just to be sure you both are on the same page.

Remeber its a brief, not a lesson on shooting the approach.

I like to use:

WEATHER
RADIOS
ATM

WEATHER – Get the weather so you’ll know what approach to expect and where your corrections will be.
RADIOS – Tune in the Communications (STBY & Current) & all VOR, ILS, DME frequencies for the approach and any associated fix/intersections/holds. Marker lights and sounds tested.
A– Altitude (MDA or DH)
T Time (MDA or GS malfunction timing backup)
M – Missed Approach (Initial altitude and turn)

What helps remind me of the timing and minimum altitude is to think of the OM beacon going off as an alarm clock. When it goes off, I hit the snooze button. When the marker goes off, I do the same. While descending, I callout my numbers aloud in this fashion:

If I’m at 1000’ for a DH of 200’, I call out:

“10 for 2” - “9 for 2” - “8 for 2”….and so on.

Why reinvent the wheel? Go along the briefing strip. There's a reason it's called the "briefing strip".

In the rare case that I come across a plate that still uses the old format, I use MARTHA: Missed approach, ATIS, Radios, Time, Headings, Altitudes.

I am pleasently suprised to see someone else use MARTHA. I was taught that 12 years ago and have passed MARTHA on to anyone who asks how I brief an approach. I tell them that MARTHA allows you to brief and set up an approach faster than any other brief which leaves you more time for other tasks while flying.

Currency
Frequencies
Headings
Altitudes
Missed approach

That's what I used to teach my students so they would remember everything.

I personally do it different for myself and for the captains.
