It was originally attached to the homeland security act. It was later removed after objections from several senators.

Well, Carlos, there are plenty of jobs that a 60+ can take right now that involve a lot of flying, just not any in a 121 aircraft.


I found the 91/135 aircraft to be more like "flying" but they don't allow you to collect the top cabbage, that's for sure.

The reason however, is WHY.

In one case, the market is determining how many pilots are needed.

In the other case, people are determining that it is okay to arbitrarily discriminate against experienced pilots who have reached an arbitrary number of birthdays.

It would be an unfortuanate time to make this needed change, so chances are that it won't pass now. But it will, as soon as times are better.

The pilots of UPS supported the other UPS employees during their strike in the late 90's. It wasn't even our contract but not one of our pilots crossed.....not one. Right is right and wrong is wrong....there is no right reason to cross a picket line. I'd walk away from the career before that......

Turbo....you seem like a nice enough guy. This forum is full of guys that make me puke with what they say here....sometimes I wonder why I bother reading it or even bother coming here.

I think you made a mistake when you crossed the line. If I were you I'd just ignor the comments. You made your decision years ago and now you have to live with it but I wouldn't forever hate you because you made that decision. You'd be better served if you just admitted your mistake and helped others see why being is scab is wrong. Or maybe you don't feel that way.

If the pilots of UPS went on strike in an attempt to gain a fair contract and the company offered you 150K a year to be a captain....would you take the job?

Thankyou. You are right, if there was a strike where I worked and I was a part of the union and I had "signed" on I would not cross. I am very active in our union where I work and we just saved 8 pilots from being furloughed through joint negociations. I do believe in the system and I work to make it work. As I have said many time on this board the EAL thing was a mess and coming from the management part of aviation I didn't really understand the "big picture" of big airplane nomics. At the time I had just resigned from Mission Aviation in a strange place and I needed to find something to pay the mortgage with. I thought everyone would go back to work and at the worse CAL and EAL would just merge. I had no idea of the deep routed problems at EAL until I started talking to all the EAL pilots involved. I wouldn't do it again nor would I recommend anyone doing it, but I did and I can't change it. But calling me names and slandering me will not make me change my stand. Handling the situation the way you have and others at CAL will. Thanks.

You and I have exchanged some words. I was about to snap at you again for that hostile remark, but then I read de727ups's post and your reply, and it got me thinking.

You frequent this board quite often and offer insight into almost every part of aviation. Just recently I read your posts about your check-flying days. You do have a lot to offer to upcoming pilots. You definitely screwed the pooch by crossing the line at EAL, and yes, that's a mistake that you'll take to your grave, but it is also your chance to teach and pass on to the new generation everything about your mistakes in this industry. Scabbing was a big mistake - yes. Teach people why. Tell your story. Replying in a hostile manner and inviting hostile responses by saying how you want to ruin people's careers is not the right way to go about it. Instead, take the wind out of their sails by explaining and teaching everyone how and why was it a mistake...
You won't win back everyone, but seeing your posts, I would imagine it would make you feel better by educating the "youngsters" by pointing out the mistakes you've made in your career.

I gotta mention something that happened early on in my career. I was doing Grand Canyon tours in the mid-80's during the CAL strike. Lorenzo was looking for scabs to come on board...think it was 50K for F/O's and 75K for Capts....read about it in the paper. I was making 600 a month flying the ditch in 172's and, had I been qualified, would have considered going to CAL. I pray that someone would have pulled me aside and told me how things really work in the industry. I'm sure the guys holding those big signs at the CAL training center would have convinced me.

We didn't have the internet, then, and I didn't know any airline pilots. I didn't know about ALPA and unions and why they are so important. Someone needs to educate the inexperienced young wannabes about the way it is in our industry and why it's so important to stick together.

Turbo, you made the decision to trust Mr. Lorenzo even after the CAL and UAL strikes, which in my eyes makes you the stupidest level of scab . This board is fairly dominated by those who were at the time too you young to remember the EAL strike. Nevertheless, do not expect us to ignore the reality that people like you tried to destroy the work of those great individuals who decided our profession was worth more then $50/hour for any captain and $20/hour for any f/o.
Pleading ignoarnce and saying that if you had to do it again you wouldn't scab is a patheic attempt to make ammends for the fact that you ignored very clear warnings before you crossed the picket line. You f*cked up, but you knew the consequences well before you ever took the job at EAL. I will not give you the opportunity to prove yourself otherwise, once a scab always a scab! For god sakes don't act like you're proud of it!
Does it bother you that many of those who decided to honor the picket lines at EAL are very comfortable at their seats at AAL, DAL, and UAL? How does their net career worth compare to yours?

It's interesting how much energy some of you put into scab-hating while the GOP is taking steps to render the pilot unions utterly impotent. After that, scab-hating will be fairly passé, IHMO.
