I lived in Florianopolis for 7 years, but you might be able to tell me where it is. It just gets on my nerves when people like you think that if it's not American, then probally sucks. DHL is a good company. Just like FDX and UPS.
Since you're looking at your map, Brazil is geographically bigger than USA if you take Alaska and Hawaii. Just do me a favor and next time you start talking sh*t about some "obscured island", you at least do your homework.
I love America and I live here with my wife. United States is a great country, just make sure you know what you're talking about.

Whoa dude...lighten up! Nobody's "talking sh*t" about anyplace. All I said was that Florianopolis was "an obscure island off the coast of Brazil," which, unless you've lived there (or you're a Brazilian) is TRUE. I'll bet you're the only guy who's responded to this post who didn't have to Google it.

BY comparison, how many Brazilians have ever heard of Austin, Fresno, or Peoria?

But then, I'm a sucker for anything old Rhumba-King Xavier Cugat ever did, including Charo. Yep, I could definitely see myself in a thong on the beach at Ipanema, salivating at the thought of what some young 15-year old girl who "swings so cool and sways so gentle" could do to a wretched old f*rt like me if only my wife weren't around. (BTW-she said to tell you how much she liked that movie about Brazil and her young people..."The Boys from Brazil." She wants to know if they ever made a sequel to that?)

But the thing I'll always like most about Brazil is that they invented "The Brazilian." My wife was right on the verge of having it done, but then her tennis partner got one first. My wife said it "looks funny," so I guess we'll have to settle on a "Samoan" for the time being. That's the one where they leave "a little thatch on the roof for the coconuts to bounce off of," whatever that means.

But yea, we like Brazil.

In my formative years, I lived on an island in the Bering Sea. It belongs to the U.S. (though geographically closer to Russia) but I'll bet hardly 1 in a million Americans have ever heard of it. I love the place but it's OK to call it obscure, because it is. Florianopolis is obviously much more important to it's region and the global economy than my home island, but I'm not sure the average Brazilian could quickly point out the important towns in my home state, either.

I agree that too many Americans know little about the world beyond their own backyard. Americans are acutely geocentric, but it's not unique to us. Other cultures and nations have their own struggles with nationalism and a narrow world view.

Brazilgun, I understand your frustration. But rather than name-calling, I suggest you welcome the attention to Florianopolis and use the opportunity to inform us about it.

I thought the GaTech exercise was entertaining even if it was very unscientific. I'm pleased that DHL did well. It's been frustrating for those of us working in the DHL USA system to see the losses and cutbacks on service. From our perspective cities like Missoula or Bozeman, Montana (where we used to offer overnight service) are not obscure. But viewed from Bonn they might be less important to a global system than Florianopolis. It would take a much more scientific exercise to determine that.
