So many stupid decisions have been made counter to a successful DHL/ILN business model that a red flag of this being but one move in a wider strategy to avoid anti-trust issues certainly does get raised.

But the offer of Astar's buyout of ABX with DHL backing was both real and seemingly genuine. In retrospect, Hete in refusing the offer and engaging in a game of chicken may well have driven the final nail into Wilmington's coffin.

The theory that DHL is/was inept to the point of incompetence regarding North American express freight operations possibly does hold water.

It never got so far as an actual offer. Merely an expression of interest that was never followed up on.

Compare that to Microsoft's pursuit of Yahoo, for example. When one company wants to buyout another, the game typically goes a bit further than just an initial expression of interest.

It does more than hold water, it's a huge spring of constant flowing water.

The first sign they were incompetent was when they tried to integrate the the whole operation from CVG over a weekend. The second was that move was just prior to the 4th quarter and the problems that quarter has in express operations without outside interference. Then, as the coup de grâce, they promote the idiot from head of US operations to head of the entire express division. Now in retrospect, how could we not have seen this disaster for us with all he has already done to prove his ignorance and incompetence. I just hope I find a good job and quick.
