Delta To Drop Boeing 737 Classics 09/15/2004 11:03:13 AM http://aviationnow.com/media/images/x.gifhttp://aviationnow.com/media/images/news/AIRLINES/Delta/dalshut1.jpg Delta plans to retire at least four fleet types and cut its fleet size by more than 100 planes, representing 20% of its total fleet in four years as part of its transformation plan, while also investing millions of dollars to upgrade the interiors of aircraft it plans to keep flying.

CEO Jerry Grinstein last week unveiled plans to simplify the fleet by retiring a minimum of four fleet types in four years. The DAILY has learned that the airline will first look to drop its 50 Boeing 737-200s, many of which were part of the acquisition of Western Air Lines. The carrier has 50 737-200s in service and two in storage, according to the Airclaims fleet database. Of the 52 planes, 46 are leased from several lessors, 26 of the latter from GE Capital Aviation Services.

Grinstein told The DAILY in Atlanta that he aims to drop the 737 "classics," which also includes the -300s. The airline has 26 -300s, all of which are leased to the airline. The -300s are ex-Germania planes that were once used in the Shuttle fleet and have 128 seats, compared with the -200s, which have 119 seats. The -300s are powered by CFM56 engines and the -200s by JT8D engines.

Sources also believe the airline will eventually look to drop its 15 older 767-200s, which have an average age of about 21 years, according to Airclaims. The 767-200s have 204 seats but are more expensive to operate than the 180-seat 757s. The 767-200s are all owned by Delta and operated with GE CF6 engines. The airline also may look to drop its fleet of 16 MD-90s, which are operate with different engines than its fleet of 120 MD-88s. The future is also a little cloudy about the airline's 13 MD-11s, all of which are grounded.

While simplifying its fleet may take time, the airline is moving ahead with upgrading its core fleet of MD-88s, 757s and 767-300s, which represent a little more than half of the total fleet. The one-time interior refurbishment aims to create a "new aircraft" standard. The first refurbished MD-88 will start flying this week. The changes include all-leather seats in first and economy class, new carpet, brighter reading lights and refurbished lavatories.

Grinstein said there is still debate internally if and how the airline should upgrade its inflight entertainment system. Delta invested in a new live satellite system across its Song fleet, but he is not convinced that it is the right move for the whole fleet. Grinstein also suggested providing power ports, as many passenger bring their own electronic devices on flights.

Did anyone actually think that we would renew the leases on the old gas guzzling 737-200s? They have leases that will expire within 4 years, and we would not drop them all at once. Eventually we will have some extra cash (after huge concessions) to buy or lease some newer aircraft----and one of the management types in the lounge even through out 737-700s---maybe. The other 737s will also eventually move out, and the 767-200s will probably go to ABEX or someone like that---not right away though.

First sign of leadership

I take this as a positive sign of reshaping the airline. Thank goodness they are refurbishing the intererior. I am not a home designer by any means but "time warp" comes to mind every time i step onboard as a pax. :D
It is a small step but a good sign that mgmt is actually thinking of what it wants to do other than taking money back from the employees. Just my .02.

FedEx

I'm sure the powers at be are licking their chops here at FedEx. We seem to love old cheap airplanes.

Why are the MD-11's grounded?

They parked the MD-11s right after the end of Gulf War because management thought we wouldn't have enough passengers for the Summer (last Summer) and then at the end of the Summer---our VP of marketing said "We left money on the table." (meaning SHE SHOULDN'T HAVE PARKED THEM) After that they decided to use the sim time (in our own MD11 sim in ATL) to train World Airways pilots. There we go again---jumping over a dollar to make a penny.

Goose,

You can have the 737-200s----the cockpits on those are more advanced than the 727, with autoland and a MCP for easy autopilot flying. We also will be dumping some 737-300s eventually---in the course of 4 years....

Thanks General

I'll call Fred!

I'm sure he would like your MD-11s as long as your in a giving mood.

Is there even a chance of the MD-11's coming back onto the property? I thought thier retirement was a done deal.....

T-Gates,

There was a rumor down at the school house that they would be brought back for cargo conversion and use---since most of our Skyteam partners actually have their own in-house cargo units---like Air France Cargo, Korean Air Cargo, and NW Cargo. But, I have heard other rumors stating that they have been trying to pawn them off to other MD-11 operators like Gemeni. Who knows?

That would make some sense... NW makes alot of revenue with thier pure 747 Classic freighters, And Korean Air Cargo moves about as much freight as UPS. Mabye DL will follow suit. But you said it....Who Knows?

At this point, I would like someone to take the MD11s off of our backs so we don't have to pay for the leases as they rot in the desert.....

PS--as for "Who knows?"----looks like Tony C. knows.........hmmmmm

General,

Did you not say in another thread that DL was trying to do something with some aircraft leases? Would those be the above mentioned MD-11's? It is my understanding that those are NOT something that can be re-arranged. So how many are sitting there costing...what...445,000 big ones? A MONTH?? This really makes me wonder who is making these kinds of decisions over at the big house.
You know, like the fuel contracts, new flight attendant uniforms etc. All the while the cash is slowly peeling away. Management for almost ALL of the legacy carriers with a few exceptions, are sending these companies right down the proverbial shiiter (shiite + r). I don't like the look of this...
So, you all going to make an offer of purchase soon or what?

Heavy D and ATR-drivr,

I agree with you guys, and I hope they know what they are doing..... And, I heard that the 12 MD-11s cost about $15,000 a day----each---to sit in the desert.....

So much for your reading comprehension General. ATRdrivr said that he posted under Heavy D's log on. I hope you fly better than you read.

Easy on the General, he probably just got off a 4 day and is wrung out. I am sure we all have made some erroneous posts on here, I have.

what is GG looking for?

wage cuts?

pension plan changes?

which of the two is more important to GG?

Inclusivescope,

Testy. The pressure is getting to you. I did just get off a long allnighter from the West Coast this morning, so give me a break please.

Atr-drivr,

I didn't know you had two names.....
