Delta to cut attendants on some flights -WSJ

Mon Jan 10, 2005 02:40 AM ET

NEW YORK, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL.N: Quote, Profile, Research) is planning to cut the number of pilots on some flights and eliminate meals for flight crews, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing a company document.

Starting Jan. 31, the No. 3 U.S. carrier will reduce from three to two the number of pilots on transoceanic Boeing 767ER flights, which carry up to 285 passengers, the report said, citing an internal memo.

The 268-passenger Boeing 777 flown by Delta to Japan will carry two pilots instead of the current 3, the report said. Delta also plans to eliminate an extra flight-attendant position it normally adds when U.S., Caribbean and Delta Shuttle flights are particularly full, the report said.

Why stop there? Doesn't that 777 have a spare engine? I mean, geesh, the darn thing only needs one, right??

Cutting pilots

Something seems wrong about this article.
Correct me if I am wrong, but Delta currently uses 2 full crews (4) pilots on the Tokyo flights.
My guess is that if they even tried to fly the 767-300ER flights with only 2 pilots, it would have to be the shorter JFK hops.
One could only imagine what weather & MX delays would do to 2 pilots.

Looks to me like someone did a little editing and forgot to change the title in the maiin body.

The real article is about reducing the number of FAs..

Ft Widget 10 point Game Plan

1st - trim the fat
2nd - give MGT bonuses
3rd - get pilot concessions
4th - give MGT bonuses
5th - dilute the brand
6th - give MGT bonuses
7th - code share / scope as much as possible
8th - give MGT bonuses
9th - cut the muscle / push safety limits
10th - give MGT bonuses

ALPA Game Plan

1st - study the problem then grieve it (or yap like a caged poodle).

NEW YORK, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL.N: Quote,
Profile, Research) is planning to cut the number of flight attendants
on some flights and eliminate meals for flight crews, the Wall Street
Journal reported on Monday, citing a company document.

Starting Jan. 31, the No. 3 U.S. carrier will reduce from eight to seven
the number of flight attendants on transoceanic Boeing 767ER
flights, which carry up to 285 passengers, the report said, citing an
internal memo.

The 268-passenger Boeing 777 flown by Delta to Japan will carry
nine flight attendants instead of the current 10, the report said. Delta
also plans to eliminate an extra flight-attendant position it normally
adds when U.S., Caribbean and Delta Shuttle flights are particularly
full, the report said.

Crew meals on domestic flights will be dropped from April 1,
meaning that pilots and flight attendants will have to bring their own
food, the report said.

Delta could not immediately be reached for comment.
