Wow. RA said in interviews not long ago, that fares would raise and there would be no more cheapo MCO / LAS type leisure fares out there that people got used to...Who is subsidizing these fares I wonder?:erm:

Could these be for the slow Fall season? Probably. During this period, it looks like airlines want to fill the planes and pay for the fuel, and minimize the losses as much as possible. Profits probably aren't in the cards for many airlines. But, you probably knew that..... what are the INTL fares? Probably a bit higher.. People travelling to LAS from CDG via ATL are probably paying more, in Euros. Air Tran doesn't have that ability.

It looks like the freshly merged, bankruptcy leaned and meaned Delta is ready to return to the market share games with Airtran. Delta will definitely be a tougher competitor this time around.

The competition will probably make both airlines stronger operators over the long run. Airtran will continue to develope markets outside the ATL to diversify their operation (like MKE and BWI) while Delta pursues some new opportunities with the addition of the NW routes and planes.

It should be an interesting next couple of years.

They just continue to lose money, whats different than the last seven years. Doesn't seem to matter in the airline business.

I beleive Delta made around 1.7 Billion in 2007 fresh out of BK then oil went up. You probably forgot about that though.

Delta is competing with Air Tran on a seat per seat basis. If they have a seat for 109 we will have the exact number of seats that they have for the same price. We are doing it to every city they fly to.

Yep. I don't like cheap fares either.

How much slack did AirTran cut Delta during Delta's bankruptcy?

At least they have cheap seats to Detroit so ACL65 and I can get to work in a few weeks. :cartman:

He did say that there would be a reduction in leisure fares, but he also made the point that they would not be reducing service in AirTran markets. (most recent qtr conf. call)

Those two statements clearly are at odds with each other and this fare sale was/is the predictable result.

CASM are less on the 757's and 767's than AirTran. Delta will be a winner on routes that support that equipment. The CRJ700/900 is cost comparable on a CASM basis with AirTran's fleet. Delta will surely have to subsidize the head to head flying against CRJ200's.

Delta is paying Mesa and SkyWest/ASA not to fly, so maybe this loses less than the fee for departure contract would force them to lose anyway.

$50,000 gamble

My company is offering me $42K plus my sick bank to quit by Sept 1. I missed NWA by one class this spring. I would go if called... Done all I can at a Regional. Sick bank is another $8K...so cash and prizes is $50k...If I get a class soon it would be a nice severance, if I get a class later and I didnt take the deal I cost myself 50K - or I never make it and try wallyworld or whatever...Lastly I have until Jan 15 2009 to go bye bye....One more caviot is it is available to paygrade 12 and above, I dont make that until Nov 12, so they might not wont to boot me out. enough
New York-Kennedy, NY (JFK) $109

This is what I don't understand. I know I'm not the smartest guy around, but..

1. DL is the only player on this route.
2. Flights are ALWAYS oversold, trust me on this one.
3. I have seen this route on these sales more than once this year, including during the summer.

I'd give anything for JB to operate this route, just to make my commute much easier to JFnK. I know that my new hire friends at DL would be happy about an easier commute up there too. But, it will never happen.

Anyway, why on Earth would DL include ATL-JFK on these sales?

I guess you're not counting 2007?
Not to worry though, once some of the rj trash like yourself is cut loose the bleeding will subside.

Watch those fares for the next few weeks. As AAI sells seats there will be less and less of the 109 fares around. They do the same thing to DFW and all of their other cities. DAL has gone on recored stating that they will do whatever it takes to beat the competition.
I agree that the flight are always oversold. Reason for this is two fold. One, with all of the delays they CNX every other flight to LGA and then it all gets overbooked, 2 People have become very smart and do not buy until 12-24 hrs out. This is the time when the airlines dump the remaining seats on to the Orbitz's of the web for dirt cheap. They always hold a few back but most are just dumped. Look at LAX. There will be 30 seats when you do to bed. When you wake up in the morning it is oversold by 25. Why, well we have made the money on the other 225 seats so now they dump the remaining ones on the market.
Loads are off after Labor Days as they always are, but they have not fallen to the levels that many had predicted. Ridership is still up. Most flts will be 90%+ this fall. That is good news for us gear slingers.

I don't get it either...I only posted the text for a small sampling of the fares, since when they get cut & pasted they jumble up...But if you go to the link on the orig post, you will see a ton more (and from other starting destinations) that also don't seem to make sense. If flts out of NYC are always packed...jack up the fares (they're used to paying too much for everything else there anyway). Like anywhere in NYC needs more demand in and out of there...If anything traffic needs to be cut in that airspace.
I love the flt from NY to Richmond...$49.

I suspect some of it is just a marketing ploy. If you look at the restrictions, it is only for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturdays. I agree that it doesn't make sense as a lot of these flights are full.

In june, Cak to LAS through ATL price was 89.00 each way. SWA was 199.00 each way from CLE, and this was direct.

The 757's and 767's probably have a lower CASM than Airtran's airplanes due to the larger number of seats, but they have trouble nowadays generating a larger RASM domestically. Thus, the general shift over the last few years of the 757/767 from domestic flying to international. I believe Delta's ratio for ASM now is pretty close to 50/50 for domestic vs international (correct if I am wrong GL). Three years ago the ratio was closer to 30/70 favoring domestic.

RASM is actually over 50/50 in favor of international.

Delta's RASM is actually above the industry average now. In the past it had trailed by as much as 15%.

Wow, just looked up AirTran's numbers. Thanks to saving ~$300 an hour on crew costs, they are very competitive. I'm guessing longevity is the biggest difference.

717: (unable to locate)
A320: 6.1
737-700/LR (AAI): 5.0
737-800(DAL): 5.6
757-200 (DAL): 5.4
757-200 (NWA): 6.0
757-300 (NWA): 4.2
767-300: 5.6
A330: 4.3
777: 5.9

* Delta's new seats that put 10 more passengers on board will lower their 737-800 CASM by around 7%, so an apples to apples comparison of Delta v/s AAI on 737's would be 5.2 to 5.0 CASM.

** Delta will get slaughtered on any markets where they run CRJ200's (13.4) or DC9-40/50's (9.5 to 8.8) head to head with AirTran. You can't make money when your costs are 75% to (gulp) 268% higher than your competition's.
