FWIW,
DTW is a very easy commute from anywhere on the East coast. Clean, cheap ($40-45) hotels right by the airport with no car required.
Lots of commuter friendly trips (4-5 day trips, commutable on both ends), although the structure of the trips will no doubt change. I normally fly a min sked and do 3 commutes with 2 5 day and 1 4 day trip.
Airport ops run fairly smooth. You hardly ever hold going into DTW, unless they're plowing or (more often) a TRW is parked right on top of the field.
Commuting in from the central time zone would favor MSP. Not quite as commuter friendly, and they'll hold you on a VFR day for looking at them cross-eyed, then put you on a 35 mile final.
The JPWA got rid of being bumped for weight restrictions, so things got a bit easier.
