So getting SLC is going to take a while. Are we talking months or years? Also, how many have been hired this year so far?

No, you could hold the MD90 as an FO fairly soon, maybe within 6 months. The other planes with a domicile there are the 757/767 and the 738. Those are fairly senior, but you might be able to sneak onto one of those on a bid, but expect to be on reserve for a few years.

"....Is it correct that the class bids on the openings and then is assigned what they can hold....?"

You bid on the vacancies (unfilled) seats from previous bids and shortages. As you progress through training and your career, addional vacancy will occur (really weekly as people retire and other go to training). When enough vacancies occur, there will be a bid. You put in your choice(s) and when it gets down to you, if anything you want is still open, you'll get it.

"....Why? That seems like a huge waste of money for training...."
Maybe, but on the day you are hired there truly is that specific vacancy; you'll get the option for any M88/73NG vacanies that occur. Would it be fair for you to be stuck with the M88 for two years while a new hire coming aboard next month gets the 767 Int'l vacancy that you would have wanted?
