Delta New Hire Health Insurance

Hey all,

No call yet, but a question on when health insurance starts for new hires?

My wife is pregnant and due in mid-July. I'm concerned that if I'm lucky enough to be hired, I won't have coverage for a couple months. I have bought temporary insurance before, but just enough to cover major emergencies. To get temporary coverage that would cover labor and delivery, it would be very expensive.

I'm just curious that if I'm lucky enough to get an interview and job offer, should I try to postpone until after she gives birth or does Delta's health insurance start right away.

I could just pony up the cash and pay out of pocket if I had to, to get on with Delta, but thats not really a good financial option.

I am currently insured with my companies group plan.

Thats why I thought it might be best to wait until my wife gives birth before leaving my current job. But I didn't want to give up a possible spot with Delta while I wait around.

Your health insurance starts on day 1, and you get a short open enrollment period to pick exactly what you want. Most are PPOs.

In a time when many airlines are not insuring their new hires as a form of cost saving....this is a very nice benefit!

That's one of the many reasons I wanted to work for NetJets.


A friend of mine got hired at Continental, has a wife and two young kids, and is trying to figure out how to afford health insurance for those first six months, going along with the first-year paycut he'll be taking. I'm sure he'll work it out, but these first-year financial hazing rituals so many airlines do are getting really old. Glad to hear Delta's at least not playing the no-benefits game.

Southwest Airlines, insurance from Day 1. + they pay for your hotel room while you're in training (not like DAL)

Since the topic was brought up, I'm curious.

Is it true Delta doesn't pay for hotels while you're in training?

If that is the case, what do most people do? I imagine living in a crash pad while studying would not be the easiest thing to do. And paying for 4-6 weeks of hotels would get pricey. I would like to eventually move my family to Atlanta, but it will take some time to do.

Yeah! Move the gang to Atlanta, good idea. Sounds like a great place to screw up a family. There is reason why most the pilots commute, Atlanta is a total ********************hole! Don't even think about it.

Most guys do get a crash pad. That or become very good friends with someone that lives in this dump.

What I cannot remember is if DAL gives you per diem while in training. Also is it still 2200 per month until the compleation of you ride?

Delta PAYS FOR YOUR HOTEL in training. They used to not do it, (I stayed at the fabulous Red Roof listening to the rats behind the walls) but they do now. I can't remember if its part of the C2K contract or just a change in policy, but it did change in 2001.

Also, no perdiem in training since you are technically ATL based for your first training cycle. And you stay on Training Pay until you finish your final sim ride, then you go to Flight Pay which is whats on the pay tables. I can't remember what training pay is...I think the contract says is $2500 per month.
