Delta mishap at PHL?

Anyone know what happened with the DAL MD80 stuck on 35 this morning? It looked like it may have been crossing the runway from the old intl. terminal. I couldnt tell but the nosegear may have been collapsed. It was surrounded by fire trucks and looked like it had been foamed.

There was the MD-80 and what appeared to be an MU-2 off in the grass also. It appears from the way the MU-2 was heading that it most likely was rolling out on 35 when the md-80 was taxing across(possible runway incursion??). The MD-80's nose gear was not collapsed but it was in the grass on the other side of the runway.......My captains, and my guess is a MX crew was taxing the md-80 over to the terminal. The MU-2 was rolling out, and the MD-80 crew didn't realize causing the MU-2 to HAVE to roll off into the grass and in the process othe md-80 got its gear stuck in the grass.....BUT WHAT THE HELL DO I KNOW! This is just a guess. I dont have any facts except what i saw about 1 hr after the incident.

Truck and Plane Collide

The truck towing this Delta jet collided with a commuter plane that is no longer in the picture.
PHILADELPHIA INT'L AIRPORT-November 30, 2004 — Emergency teams at Philadelphia International Airport were busier than normal this morning after a truck and a plane collided.

It happened at about 6:25am at Terminal F, near Gate 78.

Nobody was on the plane, and no one was injured.

The truck, called a "tug," was towing a Delta jet when it hit a commuter plane and damaged the commuter plane.

The commuter plane struck by the truck.
Officials say it clipped one of the commuter plane's wings. The accident caused some fuel to spill from the commuter plane and crews are cleaning it up now.

Except for the passengers that were going to board those flights.

Glad there were no injuries.

What happened in PHL today?

Was in Washinton Center airspace this morning around 6am today and heard people holding at fixes all over SE Pennsylvania. All I could gather was a controller briefly said "there had been a ground accident and runways were closed"

I'm glad that no one was hurt. We were the last plane in before they shut down the airport. We heard the pilot say that he had been impacted by the tug of the MD80. We thought that he might have been on the takeoff roll, but it sounds like it was on roll out or even taxi. His voice was pretty calm. LOTS of fire trucks and foam sprayers.

Again, glad to hear that no one was hurt.

Commuter plane=MU2? Maybe...if you're a check.
You obviously dont know your aircraft types well. I learned this from watching the news:

If it has one engine: Piper Cub

Two engines, with propellers: Commuter plane

Smallish jet: Lear jet

Bigish jet: Jumbo jet

:D

Yeah, since when did commuter world grow to 78 gates? But I can picture the general area. Anyone else miss the trailer? I get sentimental everytime we roll by...

From what i heard it was an Epps MU-2 on the takeoff roll when he noticed the tug pulling the other a/c across the runway. The MU-2 tried to miss the tug by veering off to the side, only to have the tip tank go through the cab of the tug which resulted in the separation of said tip tank from the wing. No injuries, just some bent and separated aluminum. The pilot reported he was cleared for the takeoff and the tug driver reports he was cleared to proceed across the runway.

sounds like different frequencies/controllers led to the conflict. Good job by the MU-2 pilot to try to avoid the tug though, if could have been much worse had he not tried to swerve around the tug. Also lucky there was no fire...

Yesterday the PHL paper reported the ground controller was on admin duties pending an investigation.

On another note, last night PHL was using 27L for arrivals and departures (normally only departures). A USAir guy was on short final when he noticed and asked about what I think was an RJ holding in position. He was pretty close when the controller started yelling "Go Around!".

I was in Philly twice yesterday. Once comming in from Tampa, we did two turns in holding due to the tug accident, and then after a BOS turn, we were number 5 waiting for 27L on taxiway S, when we say the US Air 757 go around with the Dash 8 (could have been something else) on the runway. The USAir guys asked the controller if there was an aircraft on the runway, then there was about a 2 sec delay then she yelled, GO AROUND!!! Thank God they caught the error because that would have been a bad situation. I was suprised that the controller wasn't relieved right away. She stayed on the freq for about 5 mins after that. PHL is my least favorite airport to fly out of, they are usually rude, and pale in comparison to the controllers in ATL.

The Trailer

The only thing I miss is one of the rampers (a Jamaican guy) stumbling out of the men's room of the trailer, smoke rolling behind his head like Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, dazed look on his face, stench of pot smoke in the air and him simply looking back at everyone with the "What?" look on his face. Never terminated, worked the rest of the day...too much...

Just the thought of the PHL trailer makes me wanna cry...

Yeah, that surpised me too.

For the record,,, the MU2 was on takeoff roll. Lets just say my goatee is now several shades lighter. PM me if you want the "unofficial" skinny. But the basics are 1 flatspotted tire, chewed up left prop (you should see the taxiway sign) and right tiptank ripped off the plane. Not too sure about the state of everyone's shorts though.

I was just talking to the FAA guy that was on the seen at my local airport today.

He said basically the mu2 was clreared to TO and came from a "rolling start" as the tug and delta jet entered the runway. The rt tip tank hit the tug window and left prop on the mu2 ate up a runway dist marker. Lots of fuel spilled. the tug driver was covered in fuel, luckey it didn't go up.

AHHHH the "Philly trailer", aka "the crack shack". Remember when the mens room toilets would overflow and nobody would clean it for about a week. The pond that formed in the middle of the low spot on the mens room floor, little pieces of toilet paper and turd floating around. Don't forget the maggots in the trash can by the coffee machine.

The Allegheny picnic table with the "built in bench" that had been repaired so many times with 2by4's, speed tape, and cheep stripped screws. The whole assembly weighed like 300 pounds. I there the day it collapsed and pinned a Piedmont capt and FA between the bench and table bottom.

Speaking of furniture, remember the lice infested sofa that sat in the front park of the trailer in the days before they "built" the Mesa side crewroom. When mesa bought the new blue sofa and lounge chair the lice sofa migrated to the rear of the trailer where the rampies lived. They had a 27 inch TV with a play station, cable and DVD/VCR. Non of them would work as they were all inside dealing crack or playing some video game.

remember the Mesa crewroom wars.....

Putting porn on the Mesa crew computer (wasn't me) and supergluing the mouse to the top of the desk (wasn't me either).
