Pilots, on the other hand, start out as a CFI making about $15-$20K. A few years later they might fly night cargo or charter and make a bit more. Then they start at a regional and take a pay cut back to about $20,000. If they wind up at a regional with quick upgrades they may wind up making captain in a year or two and their income will rise to about $40-$50K, depending on equipment
.
I don't think you should or have a degree to be a pilot. I don't have one now and probably won't get one if ROTC doesn't work out. As a CFI I make about 14,000 per year. Not a lot but when I think about Capt regional pay being around 50,000 I get excited. You can easily rent a big apartment with that kind of cash plus have money left over for one of those new mustangs and a chick friend. The pay is not bad and a degree shouldn't be required. Going to school sucks anyway, I can't stand it.

They then decide to follow their dream of flying "big iron." They take another paycut ($26K at UPS to start, maybe $40K at AT ...) Some get furloughed for 5 years (thousands after 9-11 actually.) They make finally make $100K after 3-5 years at a major.
I cant even fathom 100K. Holy cow what I could do with that. Honestly though, I don't expect that kind of return from what I have done. 100K is a lot of money for being a busdriver in the sky, especially with no degree. I'm happy with whatever the industry will pay !!!

Don't forget, lights out by 10 o'clock. And keep the stereo volume down in the basement. Oh, and the grass needs to be cut.

There's witty flamebait, like the guys who pretend to be French or infamous airline CEO's, and then there's the unorginal stuff. Guess which category you fall into?

InstructorDUDE, if $50k is ALOT of money to you then please go bust your a$$ at WalMart stocking shelves and cleaning bathrooms. This profession does not need more pilots like you to continue the race to the bottom.

50K is alot of money for only working 80 hrs a month. I don't even think you can work past 100 hrs due to the FARS. I'd have to work 200 hrs plus a month at Walmart to make that kind of cash. Maybe it's me but I admit to being lazy and wouldn't mind settling for 50K.

If you ever get to an airline, and I doubt you will, there are some things you need to understand.

When you go on a trip, your life comes to a halt while you work 14 hour ays to get 4 to 6 hours of pay with a little time eating in the crew room, or catching a power nap in row 9 between flights. Then short overnights at the Holliday Inn Express and eating two or three fast food meals a day. Then after 4 days on the road, maybe two days off to see you significant other, wash clothes rest up for the next BIG adventure.

As I recall, people who, like yourself, know very little about the airlines talk about how lucky you are to only work 86 hours in a month and still get paid $30-50k/year. UMMMM, last I checked, airline pilots are away from base 280-400 hours/ month. So on't look at only your flight log to determine you actual time at work. Sure, it's a great job and I wouldn't do anything else, but I don't know too many professions where you go to work for 14 hours an get paid for only 4 hours.

You have alot to learn kid. so CHECK sIX buddy, you may have skid marks in your tighty whiteys. :)

I am new to this board. What are you talking about??? I just want to fly fast jets someday and big planes. Whether I go about the Air Force way or civilian I am here to seek other experienced aviators advice!

Yep. At least you are consistent in your "denials" every time one of your new usernames gets outed.

yeh, flx757 isn't an experienced pilot. He/she has probably flown more planes than you have ever looked at.

You'll eat those words buddy boy!

I know exactly what it is like to work 14 hrs a day. Prior to instructing I worked at Firestone changing tires. Talk about hard dude. Try doing 85 cars in one shift!

You're not flying in the terminal though. I like walking around terminals. It's cool to see planes push back and watch the flight crews in their uniforms.

I do.

I'll take you at face value and attibute what you say to your youth and inexperience.

That being said, here's some advice -- It is better to remain silent and have everyone think you're a fool than to open your mouth and prove it beyond all doubt.

Good luck to you.

the delta guys would all be stapled.

I'm sure you mean to be funny but think about this --- JetBlue is a non-union company whose pilots have no way to enforce a seniority list. In contrast, the Delta PWA, in case of a merger with at non-union airline, allows the Delta Pilots to determine how the seniority will be established.

Now who do you think will be stapleing whom?

Whomever buys Comair will be stapleing you. You can "try" and enforce your seniority list, but will have about as much success as you are having trying to sue your way onto someone else's.

Surplus,

TWA had an ALPA union.....notice how well that went?
