CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Airline industry consolidation has moved a step closer to reality, now that Delta (DAL - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr) has made clear that it wants to be a player.

"We do believe the right transaction, certainly for Delta, would add tremendous value," Ed Bastian, the carrier's president, declared last week, as he discussed mergers at a Wall Street investor conference. "We're looking at the question [in] real time. It's a front burner issue for us."
Bastian also said, "Delta views itself an acquirer, not a seller." In tone, he went beyond statements made last month by Delta's new CEO Richard Anderson, who said, on his first earnings call, that the carrier is open to a deal.
With Delta in, three of the six legacy carriers are now publicly committed to pursuing merger possibilities. US Airways (LCC - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr) CEO Doug Parker, one of two leading advocates for consolidation, has presided over a merger between US Airways and America West, as well as a failed bid for Delta.
UAL (UAUA - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr) CEO Glenn Tilton, the other supporter, regularly calls for consolidation, although so far he hasn't gotten anywhere despite approaches to Continental (CAL - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr), Delta and possibly others.
Parker offered fresh perspective on the issue last week, telling the same investor conference that US Airways may have a diminished role because it is the smallest legacy carrier. "It's not as if we can force this to happen at this point. Being the sixth of the big six, we're not going to be somebody's first choice," he said. However, he added, "It's hard to marginalize $11 billion in revenue
In Parker's view, pressure for consolidation comes from two sources -- high oil prices and an impending change in presidential administrations. "I am hoping that the combination of a lot of talk and an operating environment with $95-a-barrel oil brings this together," he said. Mergers benefit the entire industry, he said, because they lead to reduced capacity.

As far as Washington is concerned, Parker noted that with a new attorney general likely to take office in 2009 no matter who is elected, the current administration may be unlikely to rule on an airline merger during the latter part of 2008. "If you don't have [merger plans] announced by year-end or shortly thereafter, it will be really hard to get something done," he said. "You would have to wait for a new team to come in January 2009."
In a dig at Delta's resistance to the US Airways takeover bid, Parker said everybody would be better off had the effort succeeded. "We offered $11 billion for a company now worth $7.5 billion. People are upset about it," he said. Also, the merger has reduced industry capacity by 4%.
The other three legacy airlines have revealed little about their positions on consolidation. For example, Continental CFO Jeff Misner noted "we're a little bit less vocal about things than others might be. We're just not going to hype things up." Continental's maneuverability is somewhat limited because Northwest (NWA - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr) holds a stake in Continental and could block any merger efforts by its fellow carrier, Misner noted.
"If somebody starts stuff out there, we're not going to sit back and just do nothing," Misner said. "We have models on every conceivable paring that you could think of. We have thoughts and ideas and plans sitting there on the shelf."

But he added that "we don't have the ability to start dominos falling. We're not sure we want the dominos to fall. There's a whole lot of carnage out there in consolidation. It's a disruptive process."
In general, there are two ways in which airline executives talk about consolidation. Both can begin with the observation if someone were to create the U.S. airline industry today, it would not be so fragmented, with the largest carrier controlling just 15% of the domestic market.
Beyond that, one can either say that consolidation would benefit the industry, the shareholders and the employees, or make the argument that airline industry mergers have generally been failures -- producing headaches but little value. The news is that now there are three carriers in the former category.

I am not an industry analyst but I dont think its a coincidence that Anderson is the CEO of Delta....I think him and his former Co-CEO from NWA are planning something.....please dont pounce all over me, its ONLY a guess....merger frenzy will be rough on all the employees involved if this cranks up. I hope things work out!

Can't Wait.....

I can't wait for General Lee to hit this one.......

-DAL will acquire NWA, United, American, Aeroflot, and NASA!
-DAL will give free "My little pony" dolls to all employees and all round-trip passengers....
-DAL will have a "Free B.J." booth installed in all employee lounges.
-DAL will dump all smaller planes and fly all 777s everywhere, all the time!
-DAL stock up 3,987% in two days after purchases announced!
-General Lee annnounced to be new Chief Pilot-space shuttle fleet!

-AWESOME!

In a recent town hall meeting Ed Bastian stated "no merger with NWA in the next six months and for many years to come."

He seemed to scoff at the idea.

He also went on to state that a significant part of the industry wants to consolidate. Specifically, LCC, UAL and NWA.

He mentioned that the industry has a "poor pattern" as it relates to consolidation, but if there is something out there at a good price DAL might consider it.

In his words: "Nothing brewing, but we will be opportunistic."

I got the sense that he was speaking not just about mergers, but also asset acquisitions.

Richard Anderson chimed in with: "Nothing underway. We are not opposed to mergers, we're opposed to bad mergers."

Jmoney,

Can you please respond to FDJ2's above response. This will be a classic! Any commentary now? And, I do have a bid in for the Space Shuttle---I can't wait for Mars 16 day trips, with a Moon stop on the way back! Maybe during that time you will upgrade to the Beech 1900, D model.

Bye Bye--General Lee

Coming out of BK there was also speculation that Gordon Bethune (the now CEO of Aloha and former CAL CEO) would be asked to be our new CEO. Had that actually happened, would people also be speculating that we WOULD BE MERGING WITH CAL? Anderson had Airline CEO experience, and was available. So was Bethune. Maybe our board thought it would be good to have an "airline guy" actually running the place.

Bye Bye--General Lee

My prediction all along has been a NWA/Delta merger in the Fall of 2008 with NWA as the initiator.

What ifs

Had that happened, of course people would have so speculated. And had Herb Kelleher been asked to be the new CEO, people would have assumed that we would be getting those Lubbock layovers after all. :p

I hope SWA buys Delta and forces General to the bottom of the lists and overnight locks him or her (which I am leaning towards) to LBB overnights.

That really would be pure HE!!. Talk about a nightmare!

But, if we do somehow merge Delta and Southwest, I will probably be your Captain (my 11 years would trump your 1 or 2 years), and I would love to teach you the art of landing. You see, not every passenger wants an "assault landing" like you did in the C-130 and what you probably do now in your 737. Also, I will be upset if you try for the first intersection on your landings. We like to go for the first or second high-speed. It is just easier on the planes and passengers. Don't worry, 3rd and 5th beers are on me.

The "art of landing?" Dude, feel free to choke yourself with your own hand. You do take the cake for the biggest tool (besides your protege instrutorbuffoon)...and pathetically, you bring it all on yourself.

BTW General Clown - his military training is 10 times that of any bullsh*t training you've had. Assault landings my a$$...something you'll never do, nor have the ability to do. And thank god for that.

General ,

Why did DAL and NWA enter bankruptcy court in NY, in the same courthouse at the same time ?

A sheer coincidence?...

Thanks Sarge. Guess what? In the passenger flying business, you are NOT allowed to do rolls and 9 G's. Nope. I don't care WHO YOU ARE or WHAT YOU FLY on the weekends----passengers want easy turns and soft landings at the airlines. This section of Flightinfo is about Airline flying. I think there is another section on Military flying if you want to go brag. If you want to do carrier type landings in your F22 at Edwards AFB, then GROOOVY. Do it. But not in a 737. Did your sim instructors at CAL say "ooooooh, this guy flies the 737 sim like MAVERICK!" I bet they didn't, and rather rolled their eyes many times everytime you told them what you did on the side..... Look, thanks for your great service, but in reality the only formation flying you will do with me is a PRM approach at KATL. And that C130 driver probably likes doing Assault landings. That would be fun, if the passengers actually enjoyed it. Guess what sizzle chest? They don't. But hey, I have done a couple landings at SNA in the 757, and I did just great....Zippy da do! Now go get um ICEMAN. (pssst----Slider, you stink!!) Do you have that lonely feeling, woa that lonely feeeeling?

Outside of the pissing contest that this thread has become, any thoughtful ideas how this industry consolidation may unfold?

My guess is....

Delta/NWA
CAL/Alaska/ and part of United
AA/ part of United
USAirways/ the rest of United
SWA/Airtran

Simple....

I will respond in all seriousness here:
The answer is simple: "Insider Trading......."
These guys are legally obligated to be deceitful with their public comments about things of this nature.
All airline execs carry a long history of either not commenting on mergers or acquistions publicly, or of saying the opposite of what they intend to do. They really cannot lay their plans out in an unofficial manner. All these disclosures are made through a very stuctured and formal process regulated by the SEC.
You can't-for instance, tell your golf buddies what will be happening two days or even ten minutes from now-even if you know for certain what the course will be. These guys could all run to their brokers and either buy or short tons of stock and make crap-piles of money. So it is very simple-the law prohibits disclosure of any info which may affect your stock to anyone if it is not available to everyone by means of a formal disclosure or press release. Mergers would certainly move stock prices, so don't expect to be the first kid on your block to hear about it from old Anderson or any of his buddies around the water cooler.
Who knows what is going to happen? I can speculate that DAL is not pleased with the fact that the stock has gone nowhere since its IPO, so they probably will be looking to do something to increase "shareholder value" as they have hinted at-who knows exactly what that will be.
