I think that the Delta Pilots are also not supposed to share the hotel van with other airlines. I was getting in the van in CMH one time, and the Delta captain said, " hey this is our van, we are not supposed to share with you guys". I told him to "get in or we will send him back in 10 minutes". We left him on the curb, and the van driver had to make a seperate trip.

Answer D. The Pilot's Wives Committee.

A long time ago (in the late 70's for you backpackers...) at a country club near Peachtree City, the idea was developed to separate the FA's from the pilots. The Comittee got the ear of the ATL (where else?) Chief Pilot and demanded the separate facilities.

The rumor that this began with the acquitision of Western Airlines (read: Mormon prudishness) is false. Western pilots enjoyed a good roll in the sack with a FA as much as anyone. TC

Will an actual Delta pilot weigh in on this? I am under the impression that the Flight Attendants may or may not stay at the same hotel depending on the overnight. I suspect this has to do with the fact that the pilots have a contract and the Flight Attendants do not. Hopefully someone who actually knows can shed some light on the subject.

in many cities the pilots and FAs stay in the same hotel. JAN, PNS, STL, MEM, BWI are all places I have stayed recently where the FAs were at the same hotel. However, we do have many places where they stay in different hotels. The reason is that they are non union. Our contract requires us to be in a "downtown" hotel for layovers longer than 12 hours. The FAs have nothing like that, so in some cities they do indeed stay in different hotels. For short layovers, I can't think of anyplace we don't stay in the same hotel.

The whole, "Sorry, this is a Delta van", nonsense seemed to slow down quite a bit when Delta declared bankruptcy and did a dirty Sanchez on the pilot group. A little humility goes a long way.

I love the visual of some Delta captain left puzzled on the curb as the van leaves. "You mean, everyone didn't just get off so you could have a private hotel van?"

What I think happened is that someone sat in the right, front seat that is always reserved for Delta captains.

Things must have changed since I retired. We always took as many crewmembers as would fit. Once, the F/O and I took the next van so F/As (ours and another carrier's) could get to their layovers, which were much shorter than ours.

We share vans with other pilots, and I have NEVER seen a fight or an argument in 10 years. I am sure there are isolated problems at every airline.

That is correct. INTL layovers also have the same hotel for crews due to safety and security concerns. That includes Hawaii.

I have never seen a DAL crew be anything but warm and friendly.

Every airline has its 1% who slipped past most of the 'interview filters'.

What, are you guys denying that not sharing vans wasn't negotiated as part of a contract (either union, or hotel?). Then there are a lot of van drivers out there who have a big imagination and all came up with the same story at the same time. This was a bigger deal several years ago.

Here's a funny Delta story: I watched a Delta captain check the room keys for each of his crewmembers before they got on the elevator so that they would board in the correct order for the floors where they were getting off.

While I guess it makes sense, I was giggling about the behavior.

You know, there's always a ****************************** at every company. We had a guy at Coex who would make the rest of his crew walk behind him through the terminal. He also wrote the famous "PA Book".

As far as Delta...this van ride stuff is garbage. Sometimes we have 3rd party transportation to the hotel that the company pays for, so I can see how a crew would want to make sure they are on the proper van. Other than that, its a pathetic urban legend.

The FA thing is because they are non-union and they mostly stay at airport hotels nowadays because of the company's cutbacks....hotels with their own van are cheaper than 3rd party limos.

At the time, I was with ACA. We were all pretty stunned. I have also heard similar stories from other pilots, inlcuding one who told me that a DAL pilot had tried to make them get out of a van that they were already sitting in before the DAL crew got there.

Most of the DAL pilots that I know are cool though. I will say that.
