Delta Cancels 250 Flights to Northeast

ATLANTA (AP) -- Delta Air Lines has canceled about 250 flights to the Northeast as a precaution because of a storm that is expected to dump more than a foot of snow in the area.

Delta spokeswoman Gina Laughlin said the carrier decided Thursday to cancel the flights Friday in an area that stretches from Washington to Boston. She said the heaviest concentration is in the New York area at JFK and LaGuardia airports and at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.

She said making the decision a day ahead allows the airline to contact customers and accommodate changes in travel.

She said canceling the flights also allows Delta to keep planes out of airports where bad weather is expected so the planes don't get bogged down in de-icing delays and stranded customers.

Meanwhile, JetBlue canceled 215 flights Friday because of the winter storm. The airline is attempting to avoid the days of cancellations and criticism that followed a storm last month.

Wiskey,

You know, you are right...we should have tried to operate in massive amounts of freezing rain. That would have been better. I'll pass along your thoughts to our ops folks.

Is this guy for real? What an idiot! Canceling these flights was the proactive thing to do! Obviously this guy is not a pilot, and knows nothing about flying for an airline! Go back to your video games you tailgunner you!

People in glass houses shouldnt throw stones. Lots of us INCLUDING YOUR AIRLINE, JB and Delta are in glass houses...but it seems US AIR is in a glass house that is cracking right now..so watch the rocks, Einstein.

I hope the passengers take their share out of Deltas' hide for this travesty!
Thank God we have a Passenger Bill of Rights!

Who cares about Delta....

Can you believe jetBlue canceled 200 flights!! What a worthless operation.

The bad wx in the NE affects Jetblue more because the bulk of their flying is centered up there, with most out of JFK and a smaller operation in BOS. Delta and other network carriers can reroute pax thru other hubs and around the weather. Passengers from Europe do not have to go through JFK on Delta forexample, and could be routed through ATL instead if there are seats, or even on partner carriers like Air France if needed. Jetblue passengers are stuck, unless Jetblue wants to rent Omni DC10s or ATA 757s like they did last time. Bad wx affects Jetblue a lot more.

Of course not acarpe!!! You really have to see the irony in this thread and the motivation behind it being started in the first place. We have in 737pylt (a Delta guy) an individual that scans the news wire both nationally and internationally looking for any dirt on USAirways that can be posted here. Now take for example the supposed computer problems of this weekend when in fact it was really WX that caused problems for not only we at USairways but for every carrier that operates in this country!!!

This was nothing more than an attempt to show just how stupid these posts are and have become! I do hope that this answers your question.

Heavy,

You just keep underestimating JetBlue all you want. Lol.

I would bet 85% of your flights start or end in the NE, including JFK/LGA, BOS, and IAD. If bad weather strikes there, you are obviously sunk, and most of your airline stops. You might have 40 slots a day at LGB, and a few westbound flights from FLL, but that is about it. Tell me I am wrong here. Your operations have been severely hit a few times this winter, and that will cost you. The other airlines can reroute passengers and have more flexibility. Understanding the facts is something you need to work on. Everyone is hurt a bit when a 3 day storm does a number on the NE, but you guys are smashed when that happens.

US Airways Says Thousands Still Stuck
Sunday March 18, 6:17 pm ET
By Maryclaire Dale, Associated Press Writer 2 Days After Ice Storm, US Airways Says Trying to Find Seats for 100,000 Stuck Travelers
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Thousands of weary travelers faced a third day waiting to reach their destinations Sunday as US Airways struggled to recover from the ice and snow storm that paralyzed airports in the Northeast.
The airline was still trying to find seats for 100,000 passengers systemwide whose flights were grounded by Friday's storm, spokesman Andrew Christie said. Many of the passengers were diverted to US Airways' hub in Charlotte, N.C., on Friday.
Computer problems, airline staffing rules and other problems slowed US Airways' attempts to clear the backlog. In addition, the airline's flights on Sunday were already nearly sold out with 275,000 passengers booked, the airline said.
"Now we are in the process of repositioning our crew, our planes and we are trying to re-accommodate roughly 100,000 customers who didn't make their final destinations on Friday," Christie said.
"I can tell you the outlook for tonight looks good. We have the flight crews available and the weather is holding up pretty well," Christie said.
Passengers in Philadelphia reported waiting three hours or more to rebook a ticket or reach a reservation agent by phone during the weekend. Automated US Airways kiosks at Philadelphia International Airport were also down at times, they said.
US Airways operates two-thirds of the approximately 1,200 daily flights in Philadelphia.
Many of the travelers waiting for seats were stranded at the airport. Disposable blankets and pillows were handed out to several hundred people Saturday night, down from an estimated 1,000 or more people the night before, a spokeswoman said.
"Once the passengers were rebooked and going through security, they were moving them (through) pretty quickly," airport spokeswoman Phyllis VanIstendal said Sunday.
There were also long lines at US Airways ticket counters in Pittsburgh on Sunday because of cancellations and delays at other airports, said JoAnn Jenny, spokeswoman for the Allegheny County Airport Authority.
"It's just a busy time of year with spring break ... and then with that storm, that really put a wrench in the works for a lot of folks," Jenny said.
A spokeswoman at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport did not immediately return a call seeking comment Sunday.
Lexie Van Haren, a spokeswoman at another hub, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, said that East Coast delays have not seriously affected flights and that there were only a few stranded US Airways passengers there.
The storm had stranded hundreds of passengers at New York's Kennedy International Airport, including hundreds stuck on planes Friday night as aircraft were unable to take off or find space at gates.
By Sunday, there were only scattered delays of up to two hours at New York's Kennedy and LaGuardia airports, with some delays of up five hours at Newark Liberty, said Alan Hicks, spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. From Friday to Saturday morning, more than 3,600 commuter and mainline flights were canceled nationwide because of the effects of the storm. JetBlue, US Airways, Delta Air Lines and American Airlines all reported cancellations.

Because we have a real hub in the heart of snow storm central. Now if there is ever a real threat of freaknic getting out of control in ATL then you too will have this problem:D ...

But, Delta doesn't really have that problem in ATL (not very often). Sure, t-storms in the summer can cause delays, but nothing like recurring ice storms in the NE. Even CLT has more ice storms than ATL. I like how you are proud of having a REAL hub in the heart of snow storm central. Good for you, you can lose more money and make more people mad every year.

I think you missed the point Heavy! Oh well too tired to try an explain.

Some of your hubs are easily slammed when bad weather hits. I used to be based out of JFK for Tower Air, and we had the same problems. Airlines with fair weather hubs can have an advantage.

Yes and no HS. The non fair wx airports like JFK produce 11 1/2 months out of the year and every so often they get jammed on snow storms. The good in this case out weighs the bad
