Delta Traffic Up on International Growth
Wednesday May 2, 5:55 pm ET Delta Air Lines' April Traffic Rises As International Growth Offsets Domestic Decline

ATLANTA (AP) -- Delta Air Lines Inc. said Wednesday its April traffic grew 4.2 percent, as strong international growth on increased capacity offset a slight domestic decline.

Overall traffic rose to 9.82 billion revenue passenger miles from 9.42 billion in April of last year. A revenue passenger mile is an industry unit measuring one paying passenger flown one mile.

Domestic traffic slipped 0.6 percent to 6.82 billion revenue passenger miles, while international traffic jumped 17.3 percent to 3.01 billion revenue passenger miles.

Overall capacity shrank by 0.7 percent to 12.06 billion available seat miles from 12.15 billion. Domestic capacity contracted by 7.3 percent to 8.23 billion available seat miles, but international offerings grew 17.1 percent to 3.83 billion available seat miles.

Overall occupancy improved to 81.5 percent from 77.6 percent.
So far this year, Delta said traffic is up 3.4 percent to 37.04 billion revenue passenger miles on a 1.3 percent expansion in capacity to 47.34 billion available seat miles. Occupancy is up to 78.2 percent from 76.6 percent.
Delta's new stock begins trading Thursday, after the company's recent exit from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in which it refocused itself on international travel.
