ATLANTA (AP) -- Pilots at Delta Air lines Inc. have made a deal for a new contract with the airline, their union said on Tuesday.
It's a rare early agreement. Delta's pilot contract was due for changes after the end of this year.
Neither the Air Line Pilots Association nor the airline released details of the agreement. It still needs the approval of union leaders at Delta, and then rank-and-file pilots will have to approve it. But the early agreement is a signal that it's unlikely to be controversial for pilots.
Pilots are the only large unionized group at Delta. Pilots at the other two big international U.S. airlines — United and American — are both locked in difficult negotiations. Pilots at United are trying to reach a joint contract to cover the whole airline after its merger with Continental. American is reorganizing under bankruptcy protection and pushing for deep concessions from its pilots. If Delta pilots approve the deal, the airline will get labor peace at a time when its competitors are going through a difficult patch with their workers.
Delta spokeswoman Gina Laughlin said reaching a deal with the union "has been a high priority for Delta since negotiations began in March."
Shares of Atlanta-based Delta fell 21 cents to $11.22 in afternoon trading.

Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL) reached a tentative agreement on a new contract with its pilots union seven months before the existing accord comes up for amendment, in an industry where negotiations often drag on for years.
Leaders of the Air Line Pilots Association’s Delta chapter and its panel that negotiated the contract are meeting in Atlanta today to discuss the terms, Tim O’Malley, chairman of the union’s executive committee, told members in a letter today.
“The negotiating committee and its expanded team have accomplished a great deal of work in the last two months, a process that normally takes years,” O’Malley wrote.
The agreement must be approved by the union’s executive committee and then by a majority of the 10,850 rank-and-file pilots before it takes effect. Terms of the accord, such as whether it includes pay raises or a change to the so-called scope clause that determines what size planes regional partners can fly, can’t be disclosed yet, Kelly Regus, a union spokeswoman, said in an e-mail.
“Reaching a tentative agreement with the Air Line Pilots Association has been a high priority for Delta since negotiations began in March,” Gina Laughlin, a spokeswoman for the Atlanta-based company, said in an e-mail. “We are pleased to have reached this agreement.”
Delta won’t comment on details until the contract is final, she said.

My question has always been, if we sign this thing is it effective immediately? Or does it take effect on Jan. 1? I know it's a few months away from a potential ratification, however if the company wants this done so bad it should take immediate effect!

I would think it is all up for negotiations. Depending on what everybody decides. We'll see.

That being said....
It really worries me when management wants to close something early. We never saw the company's opener so we can't measure victory. There is something brewing and when we are closed contract we have no leverage....I say send the POS back if it doesn't restore us to the top or if it gives up the tent to the camel when it comes to scope.

It makes me wonder if DAL is anxious to get something that will enable them to deal during any AA disposition.

Any guesses when we might be clued in on the details from dalpa? I'm getting most frustrated by the fact that we have the proposal in our hands, but the union is trying to massage it for us before presenting it.
