Delta Air Lines Boycott Underway (Stop CAPPS II)
| March 4, 2004 | Bill Scannell

In response to Delta Air Line's utter lack of concern with the privacy of their customers demonstrated by their participation in a test of the CAPPS II system, a Delta disinvestment campaign has been launched at:

http://www.boycottdelta.org

The idea of citizens having to undergo a background investigation that includes personal banking information and a credit check simply to travel in his or her own country is invasive and un-American. The CAPPS II system goes far beyond what any thinking citizen of this country should consider reasonable.

If enough people refuse to fly Delta, then it is likely that other airlines will refuse to implement this sadly misguided and anti-democratic system.

The boycott will remain in full effect until Delta Air Lines publicly withdraws from any involvement with the testing of CAPPS II.

That website is full of misinformation and its boycott is misdirected. Delta will not run credit checks or criminal history checks or investigate your banking history when you purchase a ticket. What they are doing is tapping into a database compiled by the TSA under the order of congress with information that already exists. Since the early 90's, all of the airlines have been using similar method of scrutiny established by Northwest which looks at ticket purchasing methods such as one-way travel and cash transactions.

They can boycott Delta all they want to, but soon they will be boycotting air travel altogether because I'm certain that our government won't allow this program to be voluntary for the airlines once it is established.

Those concerned with their privacy rights should contact or vote against those in congress who have put this on the American people. Delta might be the first, but they won't be the last.

Putting words in his mouth

I probably shouldn't answer for the original poster but I think he realizes that Delta isn't gathering the information. Rather Delta is participating in a test program that he disagrees with.

I happen to approve of a national database of airline passengers that have been subjected to rigorous background checks BUT let's make it voluntary!

If you travel a lot and don't want to get hung up in security you simply show your passport (or whatever) and pass through after a quick fingerprint or retinal scan (or whatever).

I'll leave the science to the geeks in lab coats.

But, yeah, I gotta agree: This BS being pushed down the throats of average Americans (all in the name of Homeland Security) is a little much.

I'm convinced we can simultaneously preserve our rights *and* increase the effectiveness of passenger screening.

mar,

For the record, I agree with everything you said. Also, my commentary on the inaccuracies were about the website, not the original poster's thoughts.

Oops. Sorry for the misunderstanding

There I was worried about putting words in his mouth and then I read too much into your post.

Maybe I'll just sit back and read now.

That website is an inflammatory and inaccurate pile of dog-doo. I hope DAL slaps a very expensive lawsuit and injunction on them ASAP.

Not saying that the passenger screening \can't be made less intrusive, but that childish and obnoxious site deserves a spanking that I'm sure Delta's legal department will enjoy giving them.

I'm flying Delta Friday - if anything is amiss I'll post it.
