ATLANTA -- A Delta Airlines aircraft Thursday veered off the runway at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport while the plane was trying to return to the airport after the pilot reported mechanical difficulties.
Authorities shut down runway 8 left after Flight No. 782, which was bound for St. Louis, skidded off the runway and into a grassy area, where its nose wheel was stuck in the mud, said Christopher Wright, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

No injuries have been reported during the mishap, which occurred at 4:45 p.m. as the plan was landing.
Wright said the plane encountered mechanical difficulties shortly after takeoff and the pilot decided to return to the airport.
It was overcast and soggy during the incident although it was not immediately clear if weather played a role. Wright said he did not know the nature of the mechanical problems or how many passengers were on the plane.
Because of the weather and the runway mishap, flight delays of up to an hour and 45 minutes were being reported at the airport. Passengers were urged to check with their carrier to determine the status of their flight.
