He must have meant stage length. Referring to the financial return an aircraft provides on a particular length of flight. Even though the 717 was designed to maximize return on shorter stage lengths, the cost advantages of single fleet (mx/training) prompted SWA to eliminate the 717 ahead of the previously discussed schedule. That's why I thought they would replace the DC9. The MD90 is designed for longer stage lengths, so I was a little confused how they were replacing the DC9. With today's high fuel cost an the DC9 burning 6k lbs an hour, you can probably replace it with just about anything and come out ahead I guess.

They're sub-leases. That way Delta didn't have to renegotiate the lease rates with Boeing.

As far as I know, the Agreement hasn't been signed yet. They delayed signing it until they fully vet the A.D. issue on the cracks in the fuselage, figured out what it meant to the DAL fleet long-term, etc. That info is as of mid-week last week, may have been done on Friday or this week.

From a pure fleet analysis perspective as they affect pilots and hiring, they are growth aircraft for Mainline pilots, since the CRJ-200's that are being retired aren't flown by mainline. They will have to hire for that growth as well as age-65 retirements starting some time late next year or early 2014, even with the somewhat minor overstaffing situation they're in right now.

That's the most up to date information I have. Someone at DALPA might have additional info than that.
