He must have meant stage length. Referring to the financial return an aircraft provides on a particular length of flight. Even though the 717 was designed to maximize return on shorter stage lengths, the cost advantages of single fleet (mx/training) prompted SWA to eliminate the 717 ahead of the previously discussed schedule. That's why I thought they would replace the DC9. The MD90 is designed for longer stage lengths, so I was a little confused how they were replacing the DC9. With today's high fuel cost an the DC9 burning 6k lbs an hour, you can probably replace it with just about anything and come out ahead I guess.
