I'm not sure of the exact definition, but we are 121 supplemental, and we are non-scheduled. I do know we have bid on some scheduled runs, and I think if we got those we would still retain our supplemental status. Oh, and we have big and small planes (DC-9s and Falcon 20s).

Who are "we" ?

It used to be that Falcons, Lears, etc. fit under Part 135, but in the last ten years that has changed, as it has for 19 and 30 seat regional aircraft. When I worked for a " commuter " airline we were Part 135 then I went to a major which is obviously Part 121, and then to a Non-Sched which was Part 121 Supplemental.

The big difference between 121 and 121 supplemental where I was concerned was flight and duty time limitations. We also picked up some scheduled runs and had to be real careful to be legal for those versus our normal flying. The 121 rules were much more restricitve than 121 supplemental. I remember one key word missing from the supplemental regs was " consecutive ", as in 8 hours of rest or 8 consecutive hours of rest. We had a lot of fun with that one, not.

That makes sense regarding non-scheduled 121(Supplemental Carriers). It sounds like anytime a scheduled 121 operator(domestic or flag) does a charter,then they are operating as a Supplemental Carrier. Thanks so much for the help everyone.

A supplemental carrier is one that has an air carrer certificate which says supplemental. That's the short answer.


LIke someone said, it's essentially non-sheduled operations, sort of charter with big airplanes. However, you can do *scheduled* operations on a supplememtal certificate if it is scheduled cargo operations. Many cargo operators are supplemental, even those who have substantial, or even mostly scheduled operations.

I may not remember this correctly, but I think I've heard that FedEx is a supplemental carrrier. Anyone confirm this?

The reason that we are flying Falcon's 121 is that we only have one certificate, and it is 121. We have a letter of exemption, I've heard, to operate the Falcons using some of the 135 regs (like duty time, etc.).

We fly mostly cargo, but do have PAX charter flights. All of the PAX flights are non-scheduled. I think we've had scheduled freight flights in the past, and I know we've bid on some recently.
