KeroseneSnorter,

Oustanding post and dead-on accurate. Nobody at my airline (JetBlue) got hired because they were Joe Stud Pilot. The question is do you play nice and support company policy. Uniform nazis may or may not, but based ONLY on their appearance they look like they probably do. Conversely, if all I see of you is an unbuttoned shirt, loose tie, unpolished shoes and carrying your hat I draw the opposite conclusion that you probably don't play by the rules. Fair or not, that's the way it is.

Sorter, I think your generalization on age and sloppyness is a little weak. I know of a lot of young pilots (23-29) who wear their uniform properly. I wonder if the scrufulufugus crowd is more of the guys who start out, I did my time (so now the world owes me). I think these are also the same group of people who talk about being paid more and then wearing the uniform. The hat deal is another subject though. There should be a consensus on that but, I think that is a discussion which is going to require beer and good scenery. That way if nothing is accomplished ... atleast there was beer. I could be wrong.

...

There seems to be an equal number of young versus old guys wearing the uniform in a sloppy manner. ----Putting on my Dr. Phil haloween costume--- But lets get real here and stop beating around the bush, what makes some guys harp on the younger guys about it ("it" being TT, skills, whatever the topic is) is frankly because in the back of their mind they are somewhat annoyed that a guy with only 500 hrs gets the exact same job that they had to have at least 2000TT for. That reasoning might not come out right away, but im willing to be money thats got a lot to do with it. Im not here to debate that, theres plenty of threads on that im sure. Yes, I do unbutton my top button on hot days. I also put my car window shades up during cruise!!!! I think some of you have forgotten what its like on a 90 degree day in a turboprop with duct problems.

***side note, guys, we gotta start grounding these airplanes and refusing to fly 'em. By just passing it off to the next crew and hoping theyll write it up as being hot, were just letting MX and the company get away with what they keep on getting away with summer after summer after summer. Just taking a quick once over and signing it off and not doing anything. After a while, we would kind of train MX and the company that were not going to fly this stuipid thing when the flow is just barely dribbling out and ive got swass all over the place. So fix it or nothings moving. I know, pipe dream, right? Plus, it gets old having the stew call up every 3 minutes asking if ive got it as cold as it'll go. Sweetheart, all we've got is warm or warmer, take your pick.

Caveman,

I think your argument holds only a little water. Let me ask you this. The way to get hired at Jet Blue is too wear a proper uniform that looks sharp all the time. I really don't think so. I know far too many guys that did all the right things, but blew it some way or another. Who knows, maybe they didn't wear a tie a few times in their career.

I know the argument that doing the little things in life will reflect in what you do in the big things in life. I buy into that philosophy for the most part. As for me not wearing a proper uniform....and after thinking about it for awhile. I think it just may be a form of protest against my company and I am daring them to confront me. Which they haven't and the won't. Like I said in previos posts....I don't believe any has the balls. Call this right or wrong, I really don't care as all of my love of aviation has been sucked out of me by flying for a certain 121 carrier.

Nice attitude!!!!Pretty sure that when you signed on to work for XYZ airlines you agreed to abide by the policies set forth in the FOM, which I'm sure tells you how the uniform is to be worn.

When the company signed our contract they agreed to pay me the wages set forth and follow the work rules that were negotiated for a set period of time. Did they follow that? NO, they did not.

the one with the bad haircut. They probably cut each others hair.

I may be gettin' a little punchy 'cause I got up at 0330, but this made me laugh harder than the first time I heard somebody get called a "focktard"... Thanks for the humor...

On topic: Like it or not, we are judged by the way we look and present ourselves. (And right or wrong, I subconsciously do it hundreds of times a day). When someone in uniform looks like a used d0u(hebag, it reflects badly on the rest of the airline...

My reason for presenting a sharp image has less to do with wanting to follow the rules as it does with wanting to be dug by chicks... Plus there's this: When I was a kid, I dreamed of being an airline pilot (or a doctor), and of wearing this uniform. I'm still proud to put it on (hat included), but when I look at my W2, I wish I'd gone to medical school...

Love the wankers that were the uniform and a baseball cap! Try that in the military and you would get a swift kick in the nads by your CO

The one with the good haircut, as he's likely gay. If I play along well enough, I'll likely get a free haircut and maybe even dinner.

Sucker.
Um, just what do you mean by "Sucker"????? :erm:

Polos and khakis easy to clean and cheap to buy

! requirement, must be washed daily, not that any one ever wears their unifrom multiple times before it goes to the machine.

Everyone PLEASE listen to Johnny's plea, there is nothing I hate more than picking up airplanes with the previous crew's sweiner or "swass all over the place"! But seriously, some of them are unacceptable and need to be addressed.

Oh yeah, sorry to turn the thread...
This is a service industry, (believe it or not) and we should look halfway respectable for the people paying our bills, imho.
