Delta profit returns to black, cash grows to $3B
July report part of bankruptcy plan to reduce costs, boost passenger revenue

Last Update: 5:50 PM ET Aug 30, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - Delta Air Lines swung to a $69 million profit in July, thanks to higher passenger revenue and lower operating costs, the bankrupt carrier said late Wednesday.
The Atlanta-based airline said net income rebounded from a year-ago loss of $41 million. Excluding restructuring costs, net income for July 2006 totaled $99 million.
Delta

Delta Air Lines, Inc., which entered into Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings last September, said consolidated passenger unit revenue gained 13.2% in July to 11.44 cents.

Cost per available seat mile excluding fuel, a key gauge of expenses in the industry, fell 6.4% to 6.6 cents in July.

By month-end, Delta had $4 billion in cash, cash-equivalents and short-term investments on its books, or $3 billion in unrestricted cash.

Delta Chief Financial Officer Edward H. Bastian said the results reflect a "more than billion dollar improvement" in the airline's operating performance so far this year.

"In the coming months, the challenge will be to sustain this momentum as we move into a traditionally slower season for our industry," Bastian said.
Shares fell 0.71% to 70 cents in over-the-counter trading Wednesday.

Sounds like the train wreck described in a previous thread.

CASM of 6.6 cents isn't bad! Look for DAL to be posting huge profits when they come out of bankruptcy. Kinda like UAIR is doing now. Hopefully the profits were not just a summertime thing and we will see them continue at all airlines.

But wait....

General Lee must be giddy with delight. ;) Where ever did that young fella go? Doesn't he want to play with us anymore??

Did someone say "3 BILLION in cash" .........mmmmmmmmmmmmm.........and they needed all the cuts/givebacks in order to stay afloat?

Am I missing something? Is there an elephant in the room?

No, they did not need all the give backs to stay afloat. Unfortunately, the majority disagree with me.

I'm still around. I am happy, but I want it to continue. The only subjects I get really fired up about now seem to be the Delta RFP, Comair in general, and SkyWest and their merry bunch. I do hope we bring back all of our furloughed pilots, and that looks to be on track so far.

Bye Bye--General Lee

Have the recent profits finally convinced you that your YES vote was a huge mistake?

It was the correct vote at the time. When I saw the TA, I thought it was the correct way to go.

how's that for politics "brother"?????

You guys deserve whatever happens to you, your kind and your precious airline...... enjoy the ride and keep voting yes to those TA's and side letters.

ps. Anybody interested in a black double breasted delta uniform jacket send me a pm.

It's July, I sure hope they made money. It's not a big deal. Let's see how Sept. and October go.............................

So would it be better for Delta to still be doing poorly and losing money even after concessions? Don't get me wrong, we know where a lot of the savings came from at it has affected me plenty...but I just don't get the people that are steamed about DAL making money now. I guess they'd rather seem DAL liquidate?

Delta has a ton of debt to pay off still and in order to buy more airplanes we'll need even more. So in my book I'm very happy to see DAL making cash...and we need to make more. Now if they spend this money foolishly, I'll certainly have something to say. But for now I'm cautiously optimistic that the new team seems to know what they are doing.

Why are you so angry at DL pilots? Looks like most every furloughee will have a chance to go back by early next year. And the company is making money. And their pay is as good as any other legacy (better, in fact, for the first few years.) And if I'm not mistaken they never caved on work rules like the other legacies.

Just asking. I'm an outsider looking in.

Coming on five years of getting kicked in the head by the like of delta pukes like the general with their fake comments of supporting the furloughed guys and then voting a POS TA in that sell the junior guys down the river some more. I could go on and on about these selfish pri cks, but its just not worth it anymore. I just responded to the general because I have to call a spade a spade..... a weakness I guess. Notice in his post he replies... " I AM HAPPY" and thats exactly the mentality of the double breasted pukes..... me me me.... biggest bunch of selfish pric ks I've ever ran across..... they deserve whatever happens to them and their precious airline.....

6.6 CASM !

What was the target CASM under that program back in the mid 90's that management wanted you all to reach? (Was it 7.6)

>>>And if I'm not mistaken they never caved on work rules like the other legacies.<<<

Wished DAL had caved on a few work rules, instead of creating 'regional' airlines by giving away jets. But, yall keep holding those heads up down in the ATL.

Voted no for everything except the strike vote. Have close friends furloughed since 11-2001. I am a junior guy and agree that many have been selfish. What are your thoughts on the medical you and every furloughed pilot have been provided with since furlough? I truly hope you never return as your attitude is beyond piss poor. Best of luck to you and take advantage of those anger management classes.

You probably BROWN your shorts every trip. I have always supported the recall of our furloughs, and have never waivered. You have NO clue what you are talking about, and you sound like a total piece of krap. We voted as a majority to support the TA because it was the proper vote at the time. My previous rants were moot because I hadn't seen the TA, and it made better sense when I actually did see it. But, you obviously DON'T want to hear the TRUTH from someone who actually voted on it, because you are soooo mad. We all have our own opinions, and 800dog has his too. I respect that. You on the otherhand are just a miserable person. Go clean your shorts.

I take it you haven't worked at UAL, AA, CAL, or NWA. Newsflash--They're ALL the same.

Now I don't agree with you everything you said, there are other parts of the story, but the senior dudes will always do as much as they can to protect their pay and jobs. Just as management will always extract the extra pound of flesh that is unneeded in bankruptcy. Management doesn't care where the pound comes from (junior or all crewmembers) and the union will not hesitate to pander to the senior members.

Was that ever in doubt?

I feel sorry for you general.... you are absolutely clueless about delta's intentions with the "76" seats you guys gave up. Just like the 70 seater.... only so many of them right? Now look at DCI.... have you even been up close and personal with an EMB 190? RJ my arse.... I'll gladly brown my short as long a the paycheck keeps clearing and the senior guys don't eat their young. Now aren't you late for your checkin for that GS you tool? Supporting the furloughed guys huh? Keep telling yourself that "brother".

800....

I never used the health care provided, but I am glad it was there for some of the guys that had kids on the way. I would have rather paid for my own health care and have the greedy bastar ds stop Greenslipping. Heard about a guy at delta that was greenslipping and making 600 dollars an hour. 10K for a 3 day trip while pilots were on furlough. Yeah.... health care in one hand and butcher knife in the other......just waiting for the right time....

Glad you are gone, man. Don't know how you got hired in the first place. Slipped through the cracks, I guess. Good to have you away from the passengers. Quit kicking the boxes in the back and get on with life.
