So, Delta will petition the bankruptcy court on Monday to dump the pension on the PBGC. Obviously, this was not a surprise to anyone. Can any Delta pilot even close to retirement explain why they didn't take the lump sum and get the he11 out of dodge?

I work with the spouse of a 57 year old 777 Captain with more than 25 years at the company who didn't punch out. Now, he'll get movie and popcorn money for his retirement. I'm just trying to figure out why he didn't take the cash when he had the chance.

Can anyone help me with this?

That's what I figured, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing some secret handshake on why it was better to stick around.

Of course, the bankruptcy judge could deny Delta's motion to terminate the plan........yeah, right. What was I thinking?
