Hi
does anybody know what the Cathay medical requirements are? did a search but not a lot of info on it,

cheers in advance

Hey Skaz,

I did the CX medical a couple of months back. It is pretty standard, EKG, Chest Xray, Audio test in the little booth, the one where you listen for the non-exsistant beep, thorough eye check up and the standard whiz quiz, blood draw for the basics, ie no cholesterol check or anything. Then a once over from the doc. Not too bad. My advice though, if you have any medical history, even minor stuff take all your records if you have them, I missed out on the job, partly I think because the doc wanted more info on an old injury I had and by the time I got the info over to them they had already given me the bad phone call. Don't know if that contributed or not cause they don't tell ya jack. Good Luck if you are going over, great company and awesome place to visit.

If you are acceptable to CX but pending a medical issue resolution, CX will let you know. Sorry to tell you this, but you were not hired for reasons other than medical.

As an aside, there are statutory privacy laws in Hong Kong that prevent divulging any personal details (including medical) to anyone other than the concerned agency and the individual. If you injury was deemed to be health threatening in any way, the CX medical office would tell you.

The blood sample taken was used for lipid count (cholesterol) and HIV screening. Again, if something was found that you should know, you would be told.

To answer your question Skaz, US First Class is generally OK, but LASIK is an automatic disqualification. They're not looking for supermen, but healthy, no-risk pilots.

We have a couple of guys with installed pacemakers and a monocular (one-eyed) pilot. We also have a few world-class athletes (triathlon), a South Pole (on foot) explorer, Everest Summiters, Aerobatic Champions and enough former Red Arrows (RAF Aerobatic Team) to form several teams. There are also several world-class drinkers! Physical fitness is important here, but not the prime issue.

Good Luck.

Thanks Cpt.
Didn't want to hijack skaz's thread with my life story, but...
My medical issue was resolved, just took a while, I know that was not the reason for my thanks but no thanks phone call. I am still interested to know why I didn't make it as I thought it went OK, but they never tell.... Didn't crash the classic sim or anything! Anyway, my app is back in again as Carol suggested so I will try again next time. By the way the nurse that took my blood said it was for HIV only? But your probably right that they check lipids too, makes sense. Anyway skaz my point was that it is not a major deal but do go loaded with paperwork if you have anything to tell, it can only help.

Hi ,

dont have medical probs at all. Got run over by car when 12, and all the minor scrapes and bruises you pick up through life.

Was wondering cause I heard conflicting stories re the lasik stuff, some people say its disqualifying, some say its not, but you need letter from doc saying youre not blind and eyes are stable.

Dont quite get it though, LASIK disqualifies you, but a pacemaker is ok??? holy cr*p, youre joking right?

Ordered the interview book, hope the gen is in there.

cheers

The pacemaker guys started normally, develloped arythmia later, and were fitted whilst employees. I don't think any airline would start you off with one already in!

There is a poster in the medical centre regarding LASIK and why it's a no-no. I'm not in the habit of hanging around HQ if I can avoid it, but if I pass by, I will stop in and photocopy it.

The "how to pass the CX interview" by captains X, Y and Z is (as the Brits say) a load of bollocks. Written by three applicants, none of who were hired. Now that's a testimonial! Use at your own risk buddy.

(I have got to stop posting when I'm knackered)

Capt Underpants is write. Preparing for your Cathay Pacific Interview is written by some bitter people. 20% of the pamphlet is written to dissuade you from even joining the Company. To boot, some of the answers to the technical quiz are INCORRECT. Now I'm not saying the book is worthless, because it does have some value in at least preparing you for the type questions asked. But take it w/ a grain of salt and do your own homework. The book is not worth 30 bucks though, and in fact should not be printed any more considering the latest information in many instances is over 5 years old! Sounds like Capt Underpants works for CX and maybe would like to publish his own book, let me know, I'll pitch in!

Cpt U....would appreciate the info, might have to go with my one wood eye and the other glass one!

re the book....now you tell me, after I order hte bloody thing, shoot! oh well, its only 30 bucks..US, sigh

cheers for the gen, much appreciated
