allow me to vent;

I heard that a lady in charge of hiring at one regional puts any application in the 'round file' (garbage can) that lists a cute email address.

that's harsh. I think I may have lost work because of that.

I got my address when email first came out. A friend signed me up and we were joking around and now i'm using that same address for all manner of professional correspondence. I can't really go back and change it now.

If you think it's a problem, you can get a new e-mail address for a buck or two a month, and have that account automatically forward any e-mail to your "cute" account.

May we experience the cuteness of it firsthand by your posting the address? Minus the domain name of course :) She may be improperly assigning a cuteness label to it and there is really only one way to know for certain.

What do you mean by "cute"?

Something silly but non controversial, like [email protected]"

Or somemething with sexual innuendo, suggestive of excessive drinking or drug use, or something along those lines.

something like [email protected], or [email protected], or [email protected]. or somehting along those lines

Depending on what it was, I could see an e-mail address getting your aplication chucked.....what was it?

So I shouldnt apply with an email address from hoslapper.com? :)

i also have used multiple addresses... a professional one that is my [email protected] and then [email protected]

you may want to setup another email account (most ISPs allow several) for the future, or even a free account like [email protected] or [email protected]

i agree it is absurd to reject a resume on the basis of the email address unless out of line but then again why do anything to draw attention like wearing a loud tie with your interview suit etc.

I agree with everyone else. I have a "fun" name and then a "professional" name that I use for resumes.

If you step into the hiring person's shoes, who probably gets hundreds, if not thousands of resumes, they have to have something to weed people out.

Further, if you are not professional in correspondence, then are you going to be professional on the job?

We once were hiring for a Flight Attendant for one of our planes. When we were looking through the resumes, one gal had her email address as bootyliscious@(whatever the ISP was). We were rolling!! Of course, all the guys wanted her to be invited for an interview to see if the email name was true!

Uh oh, I have been using a cute pilot e-mail address for all my resumes. I really hope this has not cost me an interview, I know I can change my e-mail but hopefully its not too late! Joceanlord What airline is this rumor from?

I wouldn't consider this practice a rumor at all. I would say that it is normal for any HR manager to throw out an application where the applicant supplies a "cute" email address. Also, don't forget about your voice mail message. If you are called for an interview and the caller gets a less than professional voice mail message, don't plan on a message being left requesting an interview. You only have one chance to make a good first impression and that chance may occur before you ever meet face to face for an interview.

As a practical matter, I must second the others. Open another e-mail account with a better username.

Sadly, your story does not surprise me. My experience with H.R. is it will use the smallest, most insignificant, picky thing to disqualify you from a job. I'm not talking about typos on a resume or cover letter; there's really no excuse for those. Just things like e-mail addresses. Perfectly innocent things - and others that make you feel as if you're being pressed against a grindstone. I have a list of other things which I won't discuss here.

It used to be that H.R. would see an applicant and do what it could to qualify a person for a job, not disqualify him/her. It's been this way for years. Economy aside, no wonder unemployment is up and job-hunting is he11 anymore.
