This doesn't have much of anything to do with flying but I'd thought I'd ask it here just for the heck of it.

How do you get to be a Cruise Ship Capt. driving the ones I see in NY, BOS and you see down in FL and the carib.?

What about tankers or ferry boats?

What are some other officer jobs on the ship like Navigator, WX guy, Engineer and so forth?

One time while sitting in CLT after a sim check I herd this guy talking about his brother's job driving boats/barges on the Miss River. It sounded like they make mucho $$$ with lots of time off.

Not that I'm thinking of changing jobs, just want to know for the sake of knowing - so if anyones got the info and a spare moment I'd appreciate it.

I checked around the curise ship travel company web sites and didn't find anything useful.

Thanks

Driving a cruise ship, tanker or freighter would have been my second career choice. However, there really are only two ways to go about getting that; leaving the Navy after being high on the command chain of a boat, usually a 10 - 15+ year stay. Or, graduating from the merchant marine academy and working your way from the bottom as a ship's officer. It is a very nice career, but only if youv'e spent a lot of time working your way up. Not a good second career choice as making Captain would take many ++ years.....

Ship Captaincy

There was a very interesting discussion on ship captain quals here last year. Here's the link . You have to scroll down a ways to find Skyboat's comments.

While you are sitting around "just thinking", Call FlightSafety headquarters in New Jersey and see what the requirements are. They train ship captains up there. Who knows you might have a position on the"Love Boat" or even that garbage scow that had to travel the world to find a place to dump. Let us know. It might be better than what Kit Darby offers...

Wildbill is referring to MarineSafety International, which is a subsidiary of FlightSafety.

I second the comment about Kit Darby.
