CRJ flying in Japan

I got an interview for a Asian regional airline next week. Has anyone ever flown over there? What is it like living abroad for a yankee? Any weird regs or restrictions flying in Japan? -thanks, Skeeter

A job is a job. The Japanese follow the ICAO regs. Try getting ahold of those regs.

Just out of curiousity, are you looking at J-Air(JAL) or Fair(ANA Connection) by any chance? Those are the only Japanese regional carriers that i know of.

Hope you are in good (like astronaut) shape--the medical includes BMI and cholesterol measurements. If you're built like an asian, no problem. If you are the "average american" you might want to find out what the standards are before you commit to anything...

Also, they do not validate your license--look forward to 6 months of ground school as you start on your JP commercial from scratch....

man you're going to be in for a treat. Our sim instructor was over there and he gave us tons and tons of info on what happened over there.

Just remember that over there even if the captain is wrong he's right and that saving face might even mean killing everyone on the plane.

BTW, here's the link to a great magazine covering the Japanese airline industry. Of course it helps if you can read Japanese, but every issue has lots of good photos of typical line operations.

i have flown in Japan. controllers are good, better than a lot of other countries and yup it is all ICAO. Just curious though, how did you fall into a job like this? How much do they pay? Upgrade time? ??? And I would think living in Japan would be ok, a lot better than living in other parts of Asia.

I hope the pay is good- or at least housing and living expenses are part of whatever contract you sign. You will be living in one of the most expensive places in the world. At least you will be the CA. Check out the Far East section of the forums on www.pprune.com to learn more about Japanese airlines and Westerners experiences/ problems working over there. If you need those regs drop me an Email I got a CAA Comm in NZ a few years ago and those are the regs we were tested on.

Good luck. My father worked for an airline their for 10 years and I spent my high school years there. Love it, it was great fun, and my father enjoyed his time there too. What city would you be based in ?
