Go to pprune.org...SOME of these contract pilots in Japan are not happy at all...depends on the organization your contracted with. There seems to be a steady number of pilots from the States interested in these positions, competitive mins are high...the problem is that few pass the medical. I'm not even close to being competitve with my times...
There have been numerous articles written in Japan about the impending pilot shortage due to retirements...JAL and ANA have done nothing to solve it. Soon, they have to start direct hiring for Gaijin pilots like Cathay or EVA Air...it's only a matter of time. There are not enough Nihonjin pilots in the pipeline. With deregulation, it's way too expensive for JAL/ANA to train brand new zero time pilots (i.e. Napa facility) I personally know two private pilots that are Japanese Nationals who are being recruited by JAL. They showed me a couple of message boards in Japanese...and this subject is discussed quite often. Now what's happening is JAL/ANA are trying to get Japanese Nationals (US green card holders) that are flying for regionals in the States to fly for JAL/ANA mainline as a direct hire. Again, this number is very small as well.
As far as Japan hating Gaijins...that is a myth. Like anyplace in the world...if you have respect for the culture, language and it's customs, the people of that country will respect YOU! The former CEO of Nissan is a Gaijin (French)...and so is the CEO of Sony. I know plenty of Gaijins working in Japan (mainly automotive and computer software sector) and they doing quite well. Once JAL/ANA become more like Nissan and Toyota, it will be much more Gaijin friendly...
