Let's see pop the slide and go out into a blizzard, in October no less (I doubt people were dressed for snow) or stay on the warm aircraft. Last I checked there wasn't any food out there on the ramp, guess you could go to the bathroom there.

I'll take my chances on the plane, instead of subjecting people to a hike in the snow and ice.

Don't forget to factor in a lawsuit from a broken finger, twisted ankle, or broken leg or arm, or the obligatory "traumatic event' from the ride down the 10 foot slide onto the snow covered CONCRETE.

As a passenger I wouldn't expect the Captain to authorize use of the slides, but after 3 or 4 hours of just sitting I'd start feeling clastrophoic and sick.

At about the six hour point the crew better be guarding the doors or I'm going to open one and slide away, just like the crazy Jet Blue flight attendant did a while back.

Agreed.

Start with "I smell smoke"....the the doors suddenly open. Not sure if I would even wait 3-4 hours. Pretty absurd situation.

At least in handcuffs at the gestapo station later on they'll feed you and let you use the crapper.

I am scared for you folks that think making Grandma slide down a slide and landing on snow is a good idea.

What really scares me is that those of you that think this is a good idea are Captains or will be someday. Sitting on an airplane is an inconvenience, breaking a leg is life changing. You really ought to be hit in the head with a tack hammer.

Better than this would be to slide down the rope and move the jet way yourself.

So it's better to sit in the dark with overflowing lavs, and no water etc for 8 hours. then to simply find a organized way to get off the airplane? It's scary to think you might be a capt. and simply sit there for 10-12 hours when your 50' from safety. Ohhhh nooo passengers might have to walk 100' to a nice warm building, they might die in the long walk. please...

Im not saying that I'd sit there for 8 hours! But:

1) sending people down slides to ice and snow is not organized.
2) odds are that over 50% of people would get injured.
3) There is always more than 2 options. Slides are not near the top!
4) Overflowing lavs are better than grandma breaking a hip, or a mother with a child going down a slide.

Odds are that once on the ramp all the doors would be lock as well. If someone believes that going down a slide is the best option, they might be less than the lowest common denominator... probably a prime number.

Options that would be better than slider are...
1) Calling the FBO.
2) Taxiing to the FBO
3) Taxi to the National Guard Ramp
4) Drop the rope from cockpit and pull the jetway up yourself
5) Empty the lavs yourself
6) Call the National Guard
7) Call the Control Tower (that worked in less than 30 min)
8) Slide down rope and go get a catering truck
9) Call police
10) Call FBI
11) Call Fire Department
12) Call Airport Manger

Probably the best option is........ (drum roll please)....

DONT WAIT 8 HOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if all those things dont work, I still would not pop the slides unless the plane was on fire.

Again, not second guessing but I say declare and ARFF will come with a air-stairs truck or assist with the slide evacuation and injuries would be avoided. Also, its not a jump its a slide and when I did it is was very gentle and I am sure some one could assist elderly people at the bottom. If you really think about it, ARFF should be able to get all off without any injuries and also help transport to fire station or any other exit from the airport.

You could also give those the option of staying on board if they do not want the risk of egress. The fewer on board means more resources for those that stay behind.

When did you do it? What were the conditions? I'm worried about some guy sliding down befor I can clear and clipping me in the back or taking out my legs when I got to stand up.

AVRO Training. It was really nothing. Like I said this would not be to set a speed record because there is a fire but methodical, assisted by ARFF.

Avoiding the slides and having ARFF use an Air stairs truck would be preferred. And remember, this is a deplaning not an evacuation and it is an emergency as laid out by DOT.
