TULSA, Okla., April 26, 2004 – CITGO Petroleum Corporation will move its corporate headquarters from Tulsa, Okla. to Houston, Texas, bringing approximately 700 jobs to "the energy capital of the world." The remaining 300 positions will stay in Tulsa. The relocation will begin this summer and will take approximately two years to complete.
"This has been a long road for the CITGO family, but we know we have arrived at the correct decision, a decision that will strategically position CITGO as a major player in our industry," stated Luis Marín, President and CEO. "Furthermore, the energy business is the cornerstone in the state of Texas and the city of Houston, and when combined with CITGO’s people, resources, and assets, I feel confident that this relocation will propel the company to the next level of success.
"Of course Tulsa has been the home of CITGO’s headquarters for 30 years and we are extremely grateful to the Tulsa community for providing such a great place to live and work. With 300 positions remaining in Tulsa, CITGO will obviously retain its presence here and will remain committed to both the city and to those employees who stay."
As part of the move, CITGO will receive a $5-million grant from the Texas Enterprise Fund, and the cities of Houston and Corpus Christi, Texas will sponsor $30 million in low-interest loans through the Texas Economic Development Bank and its bond program.
"Because of this investment in CITGO," Marín continued, "in addition to moving the headquarters to Houston, over the next 10 years we have committed to invest $828 million at the Corpus Christi refinery and add 120 jobs, which will result in an increase in the volume of gasoline produced at that location.
"There are many people and entities that worked with us to finalize our decision, and I would like to thank the state of Oklahoma, specifically the Office of the Governor and the city of Tulsa. I would also like to thank the state of Texas, specifically the Office of the Governor and the Texas Economic Development and Tourism department, as well as the Greater Houston Partnership and the cities of Houston and Corpus Christi. This is a new chapter in CITGO’s corporate life and we are looking forward to the opportunities that it will bring," Marín concluded.
Marín commissioned a feasibility study of a possible relocation of the corporate office when he joined the company in August 2003. He named Antonio Rivero, Executive Vice President, to head the task force to study the impact of such a move on the business. Those findings were presented to the CITGO and PDVSA Boards of Directors and were factored into the final decision.
