One of the minimum qualifications for Continental is as follows:

1000 hours fixed-wing PIC time, or 500 hours PIC time and 500 hours SIC time in a turbojet.

I was assuming they meant Part 1 PIC but a buddy of mine who applied disagreed. I checked on their website and nowhere does it specify whether they are referring to Part 1 or Part 61 PIC time. I'm a couple hundred hours short on the Part 1 PIC but good to go based on Part 61. To me that seems too easy to use Part 61. Anyone know for sure or have an opinion? Thanks

If you click under "!Instructions" in the flight time section, you will find they want Part I and no "sole manipulator" PIC. They don't even want you to log PIC while you had an instructor with you.

Enter your flight time totals in accordance with FAR Part 61 (see below). However, DO NOT include any "PIC" pilot time that was also logged as "dual". Even though the FARs allow you to log PIC time and dual time simultaneously under certain circumstances, the airlines want your PIC time to reflect only the time that you had "final authority and responsibility for the operation and safety of the flight".

If you're that close to the minimums, what makes you think that you're competitive? There are a lot of furloughed captains from other carriers that are applicants also. Continental can afford to be selective in the pilot market, and they know it.

Thanks JungleJet.

erj-145mech,

I wasn't suggesting that my times were/were not competitive, I was asking about the requirements to apply. So you're saying I shouldn't bother applying even if I meet the minimums since I'm not "competitive"? OK good idea.

DO NOT TRY TO OUTGUESS MANPOWER PLANNING

They have a broader bigger picture...

You may very well be Exactly what they are looking for at the bare minimums! Think about it...why hire all the same age/hours/experience demographic??? Mixing it up staggers the retirements and attrition to prevent large losses of staffing down the road.

Do not delay..send in your app today and think positive!

P.S. Just because someone is furloughed does not automatically make them competitve either...CAL wants "current" pilots...regardless of recent hardtimes...sucks but true

Dudemize,

You forgot the most important qualification of all: "not a pilot for Continental Express/XJT hired after 6/22/98." It sounds like you meet this criteria. Good luck.

You know I interviewed there about a year ago. So I guess it's a good thing I didn't get the job...:D

You probably didn't get the job because you're a jackass. Anyone who thinks they can log "Sole manipulator of the controls" as PIC is an idiot. How many times has that dead horse been beat? If you didn't sign for the airplane you're not the Captain. Understand? Good, now go finish paying your dues.

You obviously didn't read my post. If you had you would have seen that I was skeptical about using "sole manipulator" and was trying to settle a dispute with a buddy of mine. So chill out.
