I heard there aren't any single women in Guam, and most men there "import" wives. True or ?

No Comment, it's all mine....

I could help for specific questions....

women- good, surf- good, food- good.

I was just looking at some houses in GUM online. I found several that were under $200K. It seemed that real estate was relatively inexspensive, compared to Hawaii, for example. I can understand living there would be exspensive. Just curious, high speed connection available on the island (the important things in life)?

And yes, in case you were wondering, I spend my time daydreaming about Continental and living in GUM. You may say "get a life", and that is exactly what I am trying to do....don't have one (a life) in this regional airline hell.

Why would I say get a life? I think you missed the part where I said some people love the island and it's lifestyle. Usually the ones who hate it have a family stateside. At least a family they are not trying to avoid!

My advice would be to rent. I don't know what the market is exactly like now. I do know the island is way over priced & rents are high.

There is broadband out there, I do not know how fast or good it is. Besides, you'll be on island time. No need to hurry waiting for your porn to download.

Your chances of getting GUM are excellent.

Guam junior or senior?
Can a newhire get it?
Can a newhire afford it?

The seniority goes from one end of the spectrum to the other. Most of the senior guys have been out there for years, if not their whole career.

Yes, a newhire can almost always get it. You will most likely be the hero of your class absorbing a slot volintarily.

Define afford? It is all relative. The island is not cheap by any means. In days gone by, new hires split renting a place.

Beware of the almighty Typhoon! After Pongsona, many places on GUM went with no water or electricity for 2-3 months. Can you say stone age? I knew a few Air Mic. people that relocated to Saipan after a week of this, in order to live in civilization again. Surf is top notch, good food depending on what you like (you can't find typical American supermarket fare), and there are plenty of LBFM's. As posted before, you will either love it or hate it (It's not for everyone ;)

What's the chance of a newhire getting Houston?

Thanks,
enigma

Pretty slim to impossible from what I understand. The EWR commute's not too bad a deal, though.

What are the GUM schedules like? As a 1st year can you bid to work the equivalent of two weeks on then get 7-10 days off? (3-4 days on, two days off, 3-4 days on, 7-10 off)?

If you could, even being married and commuting would be perfectly doable, especially for someone coming from a regional used to only 12 or 13 days off a month anyway.

Additionally, does anyone ship their food in? Every year we take a vacation to somewhere very remote for 7-10 days and when we do I usually package up a bunch of dry goods (pastas, sauce mixes, mac anc cheese for the kid, cereal, snacks) and ship them over FedEx with my discount. Usually costs about $100 in groceries and $40-50 in shipping but saves us $300 to $500 for the week in buying stuff there or eating out. Would imagine it would be even more if you bought stuff at Sam's and shipped it over... (Yeah I know, I'm a cheap bast*rd). :)

GUM sounds fantastic; I LOVE the ocean and would gladly "jump on the grenade" for my fellow classmates. :D

Why are you looking English? Sorry, I couldn't resist that one.

Funny.

No, a friend of mine's ex-wife was "supposedly" a mail order bride (about two weeks after their divorve became final) for a guy that is there doing research on the effects of the brown tree snake on indigeneous birds. It was a funny story and I was just trying to get independent verification that stuff like that really happens.

She wasn't a nice person, so it couldn't have happened to a nicer person!

Yes, it happens, that is true.

The schedules from what I have heard are productive and varied. There are 7 or 8 cities served in Japan, plus other destinations. They had a couple evening trips to Narita and Nagoya but the others left early in the AM and got back in the afternoon.

Plan on doing a lot of night flying since the non Japan stuff the aircraft flows to the other destinations. All very productive, some trips are blocked over 10 hours with an IRO.

Then there is the Island hopper. 16+ hour duty day.

They used to build the reserve lines in large blocks so you can escape to the mainland. The flying itself is the best in the system if you can tolerate the lifestyle and commute.

I am not sure about the food issue. The food isn't bad on the island, just a little different and expensive.

The commute is a choice (obviously). It is not an easy commute. I don't care what anyone says. BTDT.

There are always guys from GUM in the schoolhouse. You can get much better info from these guys during training. I do not know how the initial assignements are bid on though.

THE EWR IAH commute is hit or miss. There are plenty of options though to get back and forth.

Right now, I don't think it would be to bad. When the bid closes next week I can give you a better idea of vacancies left over. Remind me I'll let you know.
