I see they are still hiring a very few people. I would also assume that anyone hired will be on reserve forever, what is the junior most base?

Also, what is the reserve call out time? Does Compass use hot reserves? It there a E175 sim in MSP?

New hires from the last class went to every base. MSP and MEM went the most junior.

Two hour callout. There is a provision for ready reserve but they don't have enough pilots to use it.

There is a sim in MSP but it's not being used yet.

.................................................I'm a bit slow. Didn't realize you're furloughed. In that case, you're not doing too bad. When I was furloughed for a year, I was taking home $362/week. I received the maximum from the State of Michigan because I have a family of 5 with one income.
Hang in there. Things will pick up.

I was living on $362/week, but not flying, not flying glass, not flying an aircraft that is in MASSIVE demand all over the world, not in line for a slot at DAL, etc., etc.

I am now making decent pay, but I'm on a 165 day trip, which is slightly longer than the Compass trips I would be on.

My buddy flies for them, and has never needed a crash pad, even though he commutes. Spends a max of 2 nights/month in a hotel in base city.

They don't provide hotels in base, and they make everyone MSP based for training. Just like papa Northwest you are MSP to train but not always for your flying base.

What do you mean train at home? So you just do ground school at home and then show up for the oral and sim?

I was provided a hotel, per diem, and positive space to and from home every weekend when I started at papa Northwest. I was also paid over 80 hours/month, but unfortunately I only made $30/hour.

Does anyone know if Compass is particular about whether or not an applicant has recall rights or is on a LOA from another carrier? I work at NetJets and we may be furloughing if enough guys don't do the early retirement. One of the options is taking a 3 year LOA where they pay you $1,000 a month and health benefits whether your number comes up for furlough or not. I'd like to get back into 121 in the long term, and Compass seems like a decent operation...so I was thinking about applying then taking the 3 year LOA.

Thoughts?

My thoughts are to just quit NJA now... Save a number for someone else who really wants it....I can see wanting to get to a major because flying 91/135 isn't their thing..But to want to leave NJ for a regional..That has to be a first....You must still be in your 20"s with no wife or kid...Or you married $$$$..Or your parents have $$$$..which is it, I gotta know...

I can understand taking a leave, but to actually think Compass would be better long term than coming back to NJ..Regionals must have changed for the better in the last 3 years?


H.ell just the free food alone makes this job better than a regional...

The advantage of taking the 3 year LOA they're offering is that you lock in $1,000 a month and free health insurance for 3 years, and even if your number comes up for furlough, you keep that. If I stay and gamble on not getting furloughed and end up getting furloughed, I get nothing but unemployment and start a job search with that many more competitors out there. That's basically my logic.

Oh, and by the way, I'm kind of worn out on flying with 60-70 year olds. Literally. It would be a nice break to go rejoin my own age group for a few years. I was at CHQ before. I don't miss their pay, benefits, and Bedford's religious memos...but I miss the people I worked with.

Sorry I didn't mean to sound condescending...I'm barely outta my 20's myself..except I gotta wife and kid to worry about now..

I understand the part about locking in a grand a month and getting another gig...I thought, and am still thinking about it too. Except I have the added weight of the fam. to consider, which makes moving to an island a bit difficult.

But I was thrown off by the part about staying at a place like Compass (again, no disrespect to Compass). It sounded like that was what you want to do! I flew at a few regionals, including Comair. I'd say that the average age of people at Comair was well above those at NJ.. of course we have the really old dudes. But most of the guys I fly with are in their late 30's or mid-40's..

It sucks being younger than everybody else, and having the same "seasoned" guys thinking you don't know s.hit.. I started in the airlines at 21 and have been getting the same attitude from older guys for 10 years. still do at NJ sometimes. H.ell I still get guys asking me if I'm am ok flying passengers. And I've been here 2 years. (I feel like asking them, when they upgraded in initial, if they waited 2 years to fly pax even though they were a captain.)


I'd say try Compass if ya can get on, take the 3 yr. LOA but definitely don't consider staying at a regional and quitting NJ. That IMHO would be the worst career decision possible. Because before ya know it you'll be flying with younger guys and they'll be saying the same thing about you. But it would be nice to be making well into 6 figures and retire with a few million. Which is what will happen givin your age and earning potential at NJ.

I just don't see it being a better move for the long term. Now SWA might be a different story, plus those guys love to party their a.ss off.. And you'd probably have a good chance with quite a few FA's every year..

Do what I do, have a beer with the old guy at the hotel, after 2 beers when he says he's done pretend like your going to your room too, but then head out to a real bar.

I believe the health bennies are 100% free or will offset the difference of another provider that someone else provides. That's unless you decline the coverage at another company. Either way, playing the system can sometimes turn and bite ya in the azz. Play with caution.

Hi!

I think the guys at Compass are a lot older than the guys you flew with at Chautaqua. They started by hiring guys with 8-9000 hours, and in the last year or so they've gotten tons of furloughees from other, often bigger, carriers.

One reason you might want to go to Compass was if you wanted to go to DAL, and didn't think you could get hired directly by DAL.

From what I have heard, you won't get furloughed at NJA, because so many people will take the buyout, that the buyout will go by seniority, and many people wanting the buyout won't even be able to get it.

Santulli has stated our customers wealth is directly tied to the stock market and not so much the overall economy.. TRANSLATION. The stock market goes up, our owners may fly more.. That's my take on it anyway..Of course he has to be more doom and gloom.

I feel the only thing really hindering our business will be the selling of unused aircraft.. Especially at the given fair market value.. Most likely I see a loss on those aircraft. We bought high and sold low from what it sounds like.

Also i if you look at our daily revenue loads on crewops you may see a gradually month to month increase over the summer months. Even a relative day to day increase. (IE..take a monday and compare it to a monday the following week or few weeks) Also remember this is a typical slow time of year. If we're looking at near 400 or more rev. flights now, you can bet by Nov our loads will be in the red and yellow quite a bit.

I think that the wealthy were willing to take a break from vacationing over this past winter. Both because of the uncertainty of their financials and because it looks bad to be jetsetting at these times. But I can't imagine saying to the wife.."sorry no Aruba this year either!"

Take it for what it's worth..I'm still relatively junior, but I have a gut feeling things will be ok. I know the X has been real busy for me.

You must train from home, via a computer and they don't pay you MUCH . Does anyone else see an issue with this? No wonder our industry can not find more qualified recruits who are willing to do this job. It's companies like this who don't pay sh*t for a salary. What a freaking joke!!! It's amazing how some will settle only because they'll be able to walk around and say their an airline pilot. Yet they fail to mention they're making foodstamp wages and only landed the job (with their low-time) because others won't settle.

You are telling me NWA won't pay for hotels during any training? Is that for new hires only or when a pilot must attend required sim training/ground recurrent who is a line holder? Please tell me it's the former.

LOTS of places don't pay for hotels in training. Lots of places don't pay that much in training. Some pay $0 while you're in training. At my current job, they fixed those problems because there was no training at all. Day 1 you fly operationally at full pay. Kind of good, if you can hang, but kind of not so good...most guys couldn't deal with a situation like that.

I don't see why being at home to train is a BAD thing? You don't have to pay for a hotel, you get to be home with your family? Am I missing something here???

Hmm... CA rates top out at 101 after 18 years, FO at 44, 1.55 per diem, mostly unpaid training with housing your own responsibility. Compass pilots are directly replacing routes that used to be flown by DC9-10s and -30s at 135/84 per hour respectively by mainline pilots (post SOC). Doesn't that mean Compass guys are w*************************? Oh wait it's ok since it's an E175 and not an E190. Nevermind....
