Sunday night, DEN to MCO, comfortable coach seat listing to ATC on AC entertaiment sys.

JAX Center - 'XX 1426 contact JAX Center 134.75'
XX - no reply, long pause
JAX Center - 'XX 1426 contact JAX Center 134.75'
XX - no reply....
JAX Center - numerous hand-offs....
JAX Center - 'XX 1426 contact if on freq. IDENT'
XX - no reply...
JAX Center - 'XX 1592 unable to contacth company XX 1426, can you attempt to raise on Company Radio'
AA 1529 - 'Affrimative'

Customer in row ahead calls flight attendant, slight panic, cockpit not responding... oops getting interesting...

Eventually, XX 1429 replies 'out to lunch...'

Great night to fly, smooth for hours. Believe we direct MCO off KC.

Wondering how Company Radio works and if company on frequency has to report anytihing.

Thanks,

You should have rushed up to the cockpit and start banging on the door.

It happens. Sometimes you're on speaker, sometimes on headset, and you've got 2, 3, or 4 radios to choose from and three or four other channels (PA, Intercom, Cabin, Flight) . . . . so, once in a while, ATC inadvertently gets either turned down, de-selected, or someone's on another frequency (say, getting the ATIS) and the other guy has his turned down too low, or left another radio selected instead of the one that ATC is selected on.

It's not a big deal. Company can "ding" you in the cockpit or message you via other means . . . much worse is when you inadvertently select PA . . . now, THAT can get really interesting.

Not that it's a choice you get, but I'd rather make a radio call on the PA than make a PA on ATC... most folks have forgotten by the end of the flight that you asked the cabin for pushback clearance, but EVERYBODY has a comment when you do the "welcome aboard, here's the flight time, and route, and weather, and blah, blah blah, blah blaaahhh" on Ground!

No, No...Pax have many comments. It just depends on whether you are the type to want to listen to them on air or to know that people in the back are laughing.

Or...more likely(at least in my case)....we're sitting there BS'in and just not paying as much attention to the radio as we should.. ;)
