It's also ironic that pop culture had a hand in bringing down the Iron Curtain, by spreading throughout the Eastern Block and Soviet Union 20 yrs ago. Now, a similar group of impressionable young people, driven by pop culture, are going back to the ideals and items that represent Communism and the previous Eastern Europe (e.g., Note Vlad and his username).

Sad, but it's their right of free expression. Too bad their pop idols didn't/don't support free speech and self determination, but genocide and horrific oppression instead.

The better solution would have been to trust the free market, and use common sense when writing laws that affect our jobs. Of course, when you are a university professor or a politician, your job won't leave when manufacturing is driven off to Maylaysia.

TB--You know as well as I do that environmental regulation has *almost* nothing to do with the exportation of manufacturing jobs.

Minimum wage? C'mon.

Minimum wage increases may hurt the Mom and Pop outfits but please don't insult my intelligence by suggesting Nike can't afford five or six bucks an hour.

What's a pair of sneakers these days? Sixty bucks?

You know the problem with business these days? Business men don't see how they fit into society.

Days past, business men saw their activities as contributing to something other than the bottom line.

Remember the factory towns? The company family? Remember how industry used to cement the community?

Now what brings us together? TV and Film.

Now the man and woman are out of the home and working two part-time jobs at some franchise or chain that isn't even headquartered in their home state.

You guys need to get some serious Eastern Block P#$$y...if you did...all of you would be sporting Lenin stickers on your flight bag and wearing red. Have you been to these countries???...those women are increadible.

Let's not forget how we drove off American manufacturing to the third world by means of mimium wage laws and the EPA.

OK ... now the gloves are coming off. You stick to radio and let the second generation, degreed Manufacturing Engineers handle the manufacturing slide to Asia. Between my father and I we've seen it all. He, at Blue Bell/Wrangler for thirty years (where offshore manufactuyring was BORN!) and me in Metal Fab, Plastics, and Electronics Assembly.

Minimum Wage and EPA laws have PHUKALL! to do with mfg going to Asia (BTW ... it's leaving Mexico, too!) chief! Manufacturing consolidated/shrunk in the early sixties as automation became more and more widespread (I have Life magazines from that time with articles on it) and in the seventies (in most industries) it started heading South where taxes and payscales were lower. In Raleigh, NC in the 80s and 90s every thrid person you met was from Ohio/NY/WV and left to come here for work. The national minimum wage was the same in WV and Ohio as it was in NC. The EPA laws were the same. But with the tax breaks and generally lower payscales (nonunion at first) greed drove them down here.

In the 80's mfrs began moving more and more stuff to Mexico/S. America due to even lower payscales, folliwing the lead of textiles like Wrongler who had been flying cloth down to PR and the Dominican in CL44s and bringing back blue jeans since the early 60s (Tradewinds Airlines was born). NAFTA accelerated the slide because it was now even CHEAPER (thanks Mr. Clinton).

Well, with Fast-track Trade agreements and GATT (back in the Republican court) it became even cheaper to do business in Asia. Cheaper than Central America. The Chinese will work 16-hour days for peanuts and be glad to get it. No tariffs ... no roadblocks ... make there ... sell it here, and sell it quickly while we can still buy Nikes because in five years we'll all be working at Ameri-Disney for minimum wage (which we will all be d@mn glad exists then ... even you perhaps).

EPA rules were sorely needed, but I know from experience that they are a pain (I've helped on compliance initiatives in the metal fab industry), to be sure. But they didn't send mfrs to Asia any more than a livable wage law did. What sent them is GREED my man.

When the last non-service job is gone (and piloting will eventually be done by cheap foreign labor too) and we are all scrambling to feed our families, remember you heard it here first ...

Democrats and Republicans are equally to blame, along with the greedy fat-cat businessmen who had them in their pockets all along.

I suspect if things don't take a better turn (and I'm not talking about just the current economic recession, but the larger problems which aren't going to get better) we could have civil war in our lifetime. What will happen when no one can feed their family except thru the grace of the 'socialist' government programs you're always harping on? Will you just keep your head down and take it? Or will you eventually get mad enough to TAKE YOUR G@DD@MN COUNTRY BACK FROM THE CRIMINALS?!!!!!!!
