Comair is an airline in an age of alter ego crew leasing companies.

That is the answer right there. I'm not sure all regional type airlines are alter-ego, but the mainline carriers want to lease crews to do most of the domestic flying. They remove all costs associated with crews and they still keep the yields on the seats because they sell all the seats. If DAL integrated all the mainline flying with all the regional flying, how many pilots would be on one list and how large would DALPA be? Lots of labor risk with a group that large. There are lots of reasons why managements at mailine carriers want to purchase their capacity from airlines they don't own.
