I heard a nasty rumor that certain Comair pilots are picking up extra flying while others are being furloughed. I hope this isnt true as I find that type of thing disgusting.

Unfortunately, it has been happening. Thankfully it has only been a few. They are feeling alot of heat for it, so hopefully the behavior will change soon.

you dont like it too bad? If I see fit to pick up open time darn right im gonna do it! Sometimes I gotta feed my family and thats just the way it is. One way or another they are gonna find a way to get that trip filled. I might as well be makin the premium paper! Its a free country and I can do whatever I please. If you don't like it quite frankly you all can kiss my blue crack! My choice, my time, my family baby!

Based on your two posts, you're off to a fabulous start under this screen name. Your trolling techniques is "aw-ight." Could be better.

It would have been really clever if you'd have said, "you all can kiss my green crack!" Get it? Green. Like the color of premium pay open trips?

I wasnt going to dignify this flame bait with a response but I gotta say, if your crack is blue your into some pretty sick stuff!

Hey its a figure of speech my man. I have no problem picking up open time at all however. Open time is a very important perk in this industry. If you or your union thugs don't like it too bad

Oh I see how it is. You all insult me because I pick up open time. I would love to argue more but ive got more open time to pick up, more extra money to make. I wonder if theres a couple days open this week. I only got 2 days in last week. I have a phone call to make if you will excuse me.

Hoookay, D'Angelo...enough flamebaiting. Any more and you'll get edited and perhaps sent to da' hoosgow.

It's happening at Mesaba too. There's 21 furloughed right now and more going out the door Jan. 9, Feb. 15 and Feb. 27 for a total of over 130. Everyone uses the "low pay, gotta pay the bills" excuse and some depend on it. Not everyone that's picking it up absolutely needs the extra. They get 18 days off and get greedy.

We're in a fight for survival and the company bigwigs get their bonuses based on being cost effective not on performance. They gladly give up on-time numbers and other performance stats if it means saving money by furloughing. Mesaba is proof of that right now. Picking up open time gives them what they want - an excuse to lay off more pilots.

Don't forget if you pick up enough open time you can time out earlier. That way you may even be able to get the holidays off as a reward for all your hard work for the year if your senority can't hold it. A lot of extra pay plus timing out? Sign me up. My goal is to time out in time for christmas in 2006.

While picking up open time sounds questionable, I don't know if it actually affects anything. I haven't done it at either airline while pilots have been furloughed, however there was a Captain at the last airline who was notorious for picking up extra fly with guys on the street. He took a lot of heat but explained his position like this. THe company staffs at a certain inflexible ratio. # of hours/# of pilots. If they have extra flying it is going to be done by someone, reserve, junior man, etc. He claimed that they would not recall a single guy regardless of how many flights they cancelled. (Which in reality would be very little unless pilots not only quit picking up but actually called in sick. At Comair's size, a few open time trips doesn't mean much.) I guess it boils down to this. If scheduling can't cover trips, will they recall a few pilots back? If the answer is yes, then it is pretty lousy to pick up flying, but if no, then I don't see the harm.

I will say that the pilots who do pick up extra fly probably don't consider this. If you think you may be hurting a fellow pilot (whether in reality you actually are or are not) and don't care, that makes you pretty low in my book. However, if a pilot knows that he isn't hurting anyone, especially to feed his family, then I say leave him alone.

I hope I never fly with you, and I truly hope you loose your license. You are truly a piece of SH!!. I have a long time to go until I get furloughed at Comair, so don't think this is personable. You are absolutely worthless to anyone.

How bizarre, the last creature I observed with a "Blue Crack" was on National Geographic, one of those Reeses monkies or something similar, the odd thing is he was scrambling for every available peanut too!

A few guys refusal to pick up open time kept me employed for an extra day. On my last trip, every time I got back to CVG I was extended. The scheduling supervisor on duty, told me that she didn't know why they were furloughing on January 1, because they were in "crisis mode". I was happy to help, seeing that I wasn't going to be employed after the trip anyway.

So to all of you douche bags who like to justify picking up open time by saying that it doesn't help, you keep telling yourself that. In the mean time I'll be looking for another job.

For some people it's all about me, and that's unfortunate.

I understand there is a nice debate on the CMR ALPA site about this. Apparently, one guy was outed for picking up a lot of open time and some name calling followed.

Good luck to all!!

I remember this being discussed in the crew room before i got furloghed. a very hot topic for some guys since the line values are being reduced alot of guys are getting in trouble with morgage payments and what not. however i belive that they are in less hutt than the guys on the street, if you wana pick up some open time, the pizza hut i am working at right now needs some part time drivers!! thanks open time!

Sorry guys but 1 way or another they are gonna get those trips covered. Might as well pick up the premo pay. It sucks there are guys on furlough right now but that is out of my control. I must do whatever it takes in this case to keep on truckin. If I can do this open time thing all year then the rewards will be greater. Perhaps someone in Hawaii can teach me and my lady how to say merry christmas on a bright hawaiian christmas day instead of working. I just need to be persistant so I can time out first. Whats the saying again? mele kalikimaka!

I'd bet my next pay check your not really a Comair pilot but rather just an internet troll trying to stir up some crap.

Belive what you must im just standing up for guys right to choose to pick up open time without harassment! Oh well ill still do it its not like it will hurt my career or anything. Hey be careful if you bet your check and loose you will have to pick up open time to make up for it!

Lucky for me I dont work for Comair anymore. My current airline is hiring so picking up open time is ok.
