I was confused also. Does comair have a waiting period for medical insurance or something? I hate it when companies do that.

It is simply a scam so they can claim anything was a preexisting condition because you had a lapse in coverage. I think it is part of the HIPPO laws that insurance has to cover it if you had continous coverage. Often, if you had a lapse in coverage they don't have to cover it because they can simply say it was a preexisting condition.

I believe he was referring to the Nigerian "send me money - 409" scams which are so prevalent on the internet. It was a rather crude joke, but nevertheless, there are a lot of dishonest people out there you have to watch out for.
I do not believe this is a scam, however.

Yes, but deductibles can add up and on a FO salary in New York i'm going to guess he may not have had much extra income.

It sounds like a very serious crash, I have heard the other occupant of the car the FO was riding in was killed. At least keep them in your prayers or thoughts.
