I'm a charter pilot and I have a BS in Aviation Technology and an MS in Aviation Safety. Do I wish I had an MBA? Yes. In fact, I'll probably go get one in a few years. However, my degrees gave me some basic business courses in management, economics, etc.

However, your degree gets you your first job. Your first job gets you your next job and those jobs get you the rest of your jobs.

I know people with aviation degrees that do nothing in aviation. Some are salesmen, one guy I know works for Sprint in Supply Chain Management. Having some basic business skills is certainly a plus, but any job you get is going to train you on how they do things.

So get a degree in whatever you want; aviation, history, education, engineering, or chemistry. You'll get a job in aviation. If you lose your medical down the road, there are plenty of jobs in aviation that don't require a medical (airport management, dispatcher, airline management, and many more). And if you have a degree, you'll be able to get a job outside of aviation if you want.

Take care,

Chris

I would like to agree with the comunications degree, DON'T DO IT!! I am kicking myself everyday for getting that worthless piece of paper. If and when I get furloughed I am pretty much screwed. I agree that you should do something technical (IT, engineering, etc.). I was naive thinking that "I'm going to be a pilot, so it doesn't matter what my degree is in, just as long as I can get it fast (3 years) and get on to flying airplanes" what an idiot...
