Commuter plane crashes off Massachusetts coast

HYANNIS, Massachusetts (CNN) -- A commuter airplane Tuesday crashed into Nantucket Sound off southeastern Massachusetts, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The incident took place at 3:38 p.m. EDT, according to FAA spokeswoman Arlene Salac.

A Colgan Air flight departed Hyannis Airport en route for Albany, New York, when an emergency was declared, she said.

The plane attempted to return to Hyannis but crashed three miles south of the airport into Nantucket Sound, she said.

The Beech 1900 twin turboprop could hold the two crew members and up to 19 passengers at most.

A Coast Guard spokesman, Chief Warrant Officer John Warner told The Associated Press that he had received information 21 people were aboard but he could not confirm that number.

- I think it was a repo flight with NO pax onboard...

May God be with our fellow airman at this time. Any word yet on what problems they were having?

The captain was a wisky drinker.. Let's all have one for him! Me... I'm having the entire bottle. The FO enjoyed cheap beer. On his pay, that's all he could afford. Drink a beer and have a shot of wiskey in memory of these guys.

Good luck to both of them. They now know more than we do.

Do you ever wonder if our "love" for this stinken job is worth the risk to our families? Is it fair to your children that they may grow up without a parent?

I don't have kids yet, but we're working on it.. Maybe it's the bottle of wisky talking, but I can't imagine having a child and then risking my life on a daily basis just because I enjoy flying airplanes.. Isn't that a little selfish on my part? Doesn't the family come first?

I'd be much more concerned about my wife driving around Atlanta highways and roads than for myself while flying.

Yea, those Atlanta roads can be scary.

Rationally, I know our job is not that dangrous. I'm just drunk and blabbing. They were both very good friends.

I suppose that makes those of us that have kids and fly highly irresponsible. Rather than take offense, I'll take it in the spirit intended and assert that one has a right to make a living. One might stipulate that no police officer, firefighter, soldier, miner, or any other profession with a rsk of injury or death, should have children...or that an individual with a wife and children should never enter such professions.

Perhaps that's why we're professionals. We know what we do, we know the risks, and we mitigate them. It's part of the job.

I would suggest that those who have doubts or who don't feel comfortable with it, should find another line of work. Having kids or a family isn't part of the equation. It's very possible, and necessary, to put family first. That doesn't mean you must give up your job to do so.

Like I said I'm drunk... so disregard everything i'm saying.. My friends are dead and I'm entitled to make absolutely no sense right now..

Thank you

Those with kids and wives are faced everyday with the question of family risk being "worth it". Especially since it is a personal issue that each one of us/them has to deal with.

I have given up the following jobs/hobbies because I was driving my wife crazy with them - and because I had ENOUGH "close calls" to fill quotas for a few others that haven't. My 9 lives are almost up!

1. Bomb squad
2. Skydiving
3. Fireman
4. Military missions
5. Bodyguard
6. Bouncer
7. Etc...

I was/am one of those that kiss my kids on the forehead before leaving for work - and sometimes AFTER I return! There were MANY a day that I shouldn't have returned from work at all. Well, on those days I would sit on the end of the kids bed when I got home and THANK GOD that I got to see them one more time.

When you do have a dangerous job, it takes a little edge off of you EACH time you survive an "event". Therefore, your "mortality-reality" sets in. This will cause you to question your profession.

Well, that question began to come about quite a bit at the family dinner table - hence, the changes. I agreed to give up the items listed above and took up piloting!

As far as being a pilot is concerned, ...........

Chpr:

Enjoy the buzz my friend. I think the entire aviation community is grieving as one today along with you and beside your friends that were lost today.

Yahoo news is reporting that the crew had trouble with the elevator trim.

Elevator trim?? Sounds a LOT like the Air Midwest crash in CLT. Hopefully this isn't a reoccuring problem.

Chperplt, sorry for the loss of your friends. I'll be sure to drink one for you after work.
