CNN: American Airlines Flight with nose gear problem

AA 862 diverted to miami for a landing with nose gear problem.

I just love the way the news people turn into airplane "experts" when something like this happens...

They'll probably make a huge screaming ordeal out of it with nonstop coverage of the "doomed airliner" and then nothing will happen. The thing will touch down on a runway centerline, ride a wheelie for as long as possible, plop on the nose, a few sparks, and grind to a stop without ever deviating from centerline.

Edit: Just saw a photo that CNN had posted online of the plane in question. The nosegear is very obviously DOWN, and my guess is that this thing diverted because the gear wouldn't retract when commanded to. I'm willing to bet this will be a non-event when it lands.

Watching it on Fox News. This guy is your typical news idiot. "The spray deflector keeps water out of the internal compartments on the airplane". I wonder if these newscasters ever go back and watch the tape of the "crisis" and learn what fools they actually look like.

They will be landing on Runway 26L. The 26 is a reference to a magnetic heading. What you do is add a zero to the number, and the runway is basically on a westerly heading. There are 2 parallel runways, one on the left, one on the right. This is what the L denotes. They will be landing on the left runway on a westerly heading.

What a clown.....where do they get these guys? I tell ya.

CNN is still the most entertaining bunch of news idiots when they have to cover live news from the desk and don't have a teleprompter to read.

Capt Pfaffly actually did a pretty decent job trying to quell the mass-steria on CNN. Every time they tried to make it sound like the landing was anything out of the ordinary, he made it clear that it was a great landing and exactly as expected. No, the captain didn't use more runway than normal. Yes, the captain held the nose off as long as possible. Yes, you are an idiot for asking why pilots sound so calm when they are dealing with emergencies. (Okay, I added the last response, but they really did ask him how pilots sounded so calm.)

Next time there is something going on in aviation and is all over the news, someone ought to call into FOX and CNN and tell them that it looks like the "Network ID 10 Tango has malfunctioned".

"We are hearing from another pilot who is familiar with this aircraft that the Network ID 10 Tango has malfunctioned. CNN News has confirmed that there is a problem with a mechanism called the ID 10 Tango. We understand that the pilots are running through the steps on the Out of the Ordinary Checklist and will be making an emergency landing in 10 minutes. From the sounds of this, it seems that there may be some sort of computer malfunction or failure that may have occurred. Miles, can you fill us in on what the ID 10 Tango is and does?"
