You will not be on a vfr flight plan in real life. Yes, by all means, look out the window. But if the controller asks for a steep 180, he is giving you separation. The look out the window is not a clearing turn, just normal operating procedure.
Are we talking about looking out the window and saying "clear left", or actually making clearing turns with the airplane like you did before starting a chandelle your flight instructor?
Both are ridiculous, but the latter is completely absurd.
