I know there are a lot of pros out there that have commuting down to a science, so here we go:

We Live in SLC, Looks like the job will be in OAK, PHX, or maybe LAS (that narrows the airline down quite a bit)

If I have to commute, can we claim the hotels/crashpad, phone expenses, and all the like or is this a no no.

Tonka
If you are based in OAK you can't deduct the commute. However if you pick up in PHX and/or LAS then you can deduct the commute, including hotels and crashpads. So get based in one of the 3 and give your whole line away and then pick up in the others, then you can deduct everything.

- You can't deduct education expenses if they are necessary to meet the minimum requirements for your job.

Example: If you're an administrative assistant, the ability to type is a requirement of your job. In this case, you can't deduct typing classes.

How do you deduct a type rating based on this example?

If you can buy an interest in a business or ownership in a rental property, you may potentially be able to deduct expenses traveling and checking on that business (and then go fly)...

It's another potential angle on the predicament...

Or just don't pay your taxes like our buddy from the movie "Blade"....

Or Willie Nelson..
Or that guy from the first Survivor..
Or that old man who barricaded himself recently in his house up Northeast someplace.

you guys are a wealth of knowledge.

Back when I had no money, life was simple, the cheapest case of beer was about $4.99 and Ramen noodles went with anything.

Oh how things change.

Thanks again for the postings

I don't know it for a a fact but an FFDO buddy of mine says there are all kinds of deductions available when you are carrying........

Lebowski is correct and man, it can really add up. Don't try and do it yourself with Turbo-Dolt....get a real avaiation accountant. Mine charges $90-115 every year and I get a truck load of money dumped in my mailbox by March 1st.

On behalf of the US Govt., we thank you for your generous interest-free loan; we hope you never figure out that was always your money to keep in the first place.
