Nothing new. Every airline does it to some degree. Even Mesaba at the top of their game in the late 90's had an "occurence" policy. Lazy or deathbed, more than 5 in a year could get you fired.
Needs to stop.
Piedmont. And if they aren't happy with you calling in sick but realize that you were, in fact sick, they will call you on the carpet for "the way you called in sick".
That way, they can't be in trouble for saying you weren't sick.
