Sure they do, I had one break off a P-3 on takeoff. Nice clean break at the wing root, it stayed there and burned, the rest of the airplane continued on down the side of the runway. Improper aborted takeoff caused this one. The early Electra's had two in flight wing separations back in the early 60's due to a something called "Whirl Mode"

These come to mind. We don't know what kind of stresses the aircraft was under before separation.
