Im going to be jumpseating out west on United and on my way back I need to check a bag as it is to big to be carried on. Will they let me do it? I have to make one connection so what happens if I don't make the connection and instead take another carrier? Thanks in advance!

Usually you can. Just check in at the ticket counter. Nowadays, most airlines put jumpseaters in as low priority non-revs anyhow, so you'll just go like a non rev. Don't be surprised if they charge you to check a bag, though.

Not worth it

If I were you, I'd take it over to FedEx and use your discount to ship it home. Though if it is really heavy, it can be pretty steep even with the discount. I have taken to shipping the big stuff FexEx Ground. Makes life easy.....that's what we want right, easy?? Or is it just me??

Yeah, I would not check it at all. Mail it. Or break it down into two bags or something.

I checked a bag while jumpseating on United years ago and the agent was new or something. She kept saying that she needed to write CREW on the tag and I kept saying, "No, I just want it checked like a normal bag so it will go to the ticket counter." She got somebody else involved and they put on their thinking caps and put some sort of OMC Crew tag on it. I was biting my tongue because I knew what was going to happen, but I needed the ride. Yep, my bag stayed on the plane and I had to claim it the next day when someone with a brain figured it out.
Fedex it and forget it.
